Being Black Means We Have to be 200% Better

Well said. The very act and the anxiety that comes with having to “code-switch” numerous times is something that white people never have to worry about. Every morning, for years now, I have had to check my identity at the door in order to work a job. I’ve grown so sick of it that I don’t make much of an effort to do so any longer. I have a 14-year old son, and having to constantly tell him that he has to be 200% better than any other teenage has created a dilemma with me. It’s extremely ridiculous that our teenagers can’t be allowed to make the same mistakes and learn from them the way white teenagers can. Instead, any mistake a Black teenager makes can end up in either death, an arrest, or a label. The whole “race card” thing that many whites use is a misnomer. True is, the “race card” is dealt from a deck where whites are the dealers of the hand.
