Do you need curation to succeed financially on Medium? It’s one of the most fundamental questions about writing on this platform.

The traditional advice is that curation (also called “distribution in topics”) is crucial. After all, curation means your story will be pushed out to Medium members via the app, the daily digest email, and the homepage.

No curation means no readers, right?

On the other hand, writers like August Birch never get curated yet are still here making money. (If you’re wondering why he never gets curated, it’s because he won’t remove the giant call-to-action or CTA from his articles).

I’m not sure how much money he is making, but it seems like it’s enough to keep writing on Medium. Then again, he loves email subscribers.

Do you really need curation to make money from the Medium Partner Program? Let’s take a look at my recent earnings to find out.
