“If Dolores starts growing a spine only to melt in William’s arms, isn’t she only a slightly modified version of the trophy she’s always been to Westworld’s paying customers? She certainly isn’t enough her own woman yet for this to feel like a partnership between equals.”

I interpreted this differently. To me, it felt like Dolores is becoming a sentient being, to the point of being able to manipulate William in order to achieve what she wants. She’s doing this in the easiest and most classic way, by making him fall for her. Maybe that’s not even a revelation, just programmed into her code, a la the “Everything here will seduce you” line.
