Blood Sucker in Disguise

Bram Stoker Dracula

Then

In the old days you could spot a Dracula from few meters away and they will probably give you a goose bumps before you meet them in the eye. When you finally see their eyes its already too late, because most of the time they would outrun you, and will suck your blood out immediately.

You will also would have a problem to trust anyone who’s wearing a cape whose only wander in the middle of the night, or at least after the sun goes down. And most of the time they only wear a black, red, and white outfit. Everyone in their right mind will tend to avoid this mysterious figure, except if you are really into this kind of mysterious and creepy guy.

This is where a real Dracula live

Speaking of where they live, in the old days, where Dracula is still a scary creature that you never wish to meet in your life, they are usually live in a huge unkept castle in the middle of nowhere. To reach that place you have to walk deep into the forest where no other house that could be found in 10 miles radius. Imagine who is in their right mind want to come to a lair of serial killer(s) that lies in the middle of nowhere, except if you are really into old and haunted buildings.

To be honest, for me it’s more like a group of fashion enthusiast instead of serial killer.

Now

Things have change in the last decade, somehow the blood sucker that could put your life in danger, getting sexier and more attractive than it ever was before. Modern days Dracula also start to wear some of the most up to date fashion items, hell, even they are far more fashionable than most of the young folks that we have around, I guess it was more possible for us to find this people to wander in a streets of fashion city such as Paris, instead of find this people to wander in the middle of forest.

Oh, they are definitely getting younger too, I think they realise there is a need to look fabulous the whole time, regardless of your profession, even if you are an immortal serial killer whose suck people blood.

Modern days Dracula live in a house that was designed to meet their fashion taste. This is a building that was filled with immortal serial killer from the Twilight movie, imagine you are invited to a building that’s most likely designed by a famous architect and the interior designs make Ikea store looks like a garbage dump. You will most likely to accept the invitation, even you’ll wish you could spent few nights in this wonderful building. Because, who’s not excited to be invited to this place that was filled with always young fabulous immortal serial killer.

Blood Sucking Workplace

I’m not an advocate for Old School Dracula, although I admit I dislike the way they depict Dracula in modern days. But, while writing this comparison story, I realise that this story is quite similar with a company that I’ve worked before.

In the old days it was much easier to find a company that have suck buildings and filled with boring people, you could sense it from miles away, and most of the time your friends won’t refer you to apply to that place. But nowadays the trend have shifted. Before graduated, I once worked in a company that have great and friendly people in it, and the workplace are so comfortable that sometimes I slept there because home are kinda boring compare to it. The works there are also fun and challenging for a college student like me at that time.

Although with all the perks, after few months I feel stuck and feel that I’m going nowhere, it’s not about the work, and the people are supportive and nice, but its somehow give create a bubbles around me, and suck my creativity and work energy to almost zero.

One day I recall the days that I spent in that place with a fellow worker that works there too, long after we graduated from college. Most of us agree that although the work is fun, but its too repetitive, everyday we are asked to produce the same product with the same requirement and with no new extra knowledge, problem, solution, or even specification. At that workplace we are asked to act like a conveyor belt that produce the same things everyday, we have to produce about 10 or more face avatar illustrations per day for 5 days straight every week.

Even though most of the things that I describe above sounds so negative, in that particular workplace we also learn how to keep delivering good quality product consistently, everyday, without exception, and the QC officer are so strict that if your illustrations didn’t meet the standard they will ask you to re-do it.

It seems to me that at one point of our life we have to deal with this kind of workplace and see it through, so we could grow to be a better professional. Like the old saying “What Doesn’t Kill You Makes You Stronger”, sometimes this blood sucking workplace is necessary for our growth, but just make sure it doesn’t suck all your creative juice and work energy, because I also see some people stuck in that place for years and became too afraid to see the light of opportunity in other job or workplace.

Because like Dracula, once you stay in the dark for so long, the light of day will hurt you or even burn you. I believe it also applies to creativity and work energy, once you lose it, you might be terified to see a light in the new opportunity.
