I am always a fan of a good jaunty-gypsy sound, and the new music video and song “Let’s Start a Riot” by The Haymarket Squares is deliciously mischievous in that regard.

This video is riddled with familiar stereotypes and jobs that anyone can instantly relate to having themselves in this industrial society. That is what makes this video so brilliant. Well that and lyrics inciting you to torch it all!

The song kicks in with a jagged double bass line, which is then joined by accordion, guitar and violin in a slow Danny Elfman-like gypsy dance.

“Another wasted day that’s filled with meetings and reports / Hey boss, I’m leaving early / there’s some cars I want to torch, let’s start a riot” are lyrics sung by the lead Marc Oxborrow. Accompanying chromatic guitar descending lines and squealing violin runs decorate a nice dark melodic canvas as the song continues it’s journey.

It is quite fun to see the transformation in the characters throughout the video too as they grow more angsty and shocking to watch.

Excellently exchanged solos get traded by Mark Allred on guitar, Mark Sunman on accordion, and the violin player Jayson James.

Perhaps my favorite lyric of the whole piece was “Well here’s what they don’t tell you about how growing up will be / the crushing weight of boredom and responsibility, let’s start a riot”.

I predict, the full record ‘Light It Up’ will match the fire of this delightful dissent into madness.

Check out the full album here, whilst I boil up the pot for the Desert Noise full record review!
