NotJustOK (The Redesign)

If you are passionate about the Afrobeat genre, and love Nigerian music, then you know NotjustOK is the number one music website and one of the most visited in Nigeria. Created in 2006 by Ademola Ogundele, NotJustOK boosts over 1.2 million viewers per month from 183 countries (See here).

Here we are in 2016, which means NotJustOK is 10 years old and is by every means a huge accomplishment on the part of its creator. As a regular visitor, for approximately 8 years, one thing has struck me for about a year now i.e. its design. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to show you what it looked like between 2008 and 2012.

In 2013, the site received a well deserved upgrade (See the image below):

NotJustOK (2013)

Ladies and gentlemen, this was a much needed and refreshing look compared to what it previously was. I was happy to see that the folks at NotJustOK cared about their users and were willing to make sure we continuously stayed engaged.

Here are a list of features/additions that were released:

  1. Music Player
  2. Playlist
  3. Dedicated tabs for Music, Video, Photos, etc.

Very little, you might say but at the time, these additions were considered great. I went through the comments section, reading how users felt about the new upgrade. Over 90% of them loved what they were seeing and their views weren’t different from mine.

Here we are in 2016, it’s been 3 years since the last major upgrade and some folks will certainly be expecting something new. Sometime in June, I saw this tweet by @DonBoye_ which said NotJustOK was wearing a new look.

So I quickly visited the site to see what’s new and what had changed.

NotJustOK (2016)

I thought it was a good one but still felt like a few things were missing. The layout was really nice, due to the fact that I could see more content, at first glance. Also, the Music Player looked cleaner and had been moved to the bottom of the page. Somehow I still expected more, considering the manner in which the web has evolved. It will only be fitting for a release that will further improve on its design and user experience. Here are some of the additions I expected:

  1. Create playlist (at least one)
  2. Direct play (Play a song or video without launching a new tab in browser)
  3. Eliminate opening of multiple tabs in browser (to a degree)
  4. Recommendations
  5. Popular and New Releases
  6. Like, Share and Comment while on the same page

It might seem like I am asking for too much but it’s very doable :) Let’s see how.

A few months later, I decided to come up with a design which I feel a webpage with still so much to offer should look like. As a designer, I like to keep it simple (See here) and clean. Here is what I have prepared and it is by no means a complete package but it encompasses most of the points listed above.

Take a look for yourself:

I think anything of this sort in a new release will be satisfying to the users of NotJustOK. Over the years, Most of us have seen the transformation of many web applications such as Deezer, Facebook, Twitter, etc. Getting the same treat from our beloved Nigeria music website won’t be any different.

That said, I hope the folks at NotJustOK gets to see what a passionate music fan and designer has put together here.

Meanwhile, I would love to hear your thoughts:

  1. Do you think this will be a good enough upgrade?
  2. What do you think is missing?
  3. Is this too complicated for users or is there too much to it?

Let me know :)
