Photoshop and its Measurement units

In Photoshop, you get to see many measurement units. It helps you to set your own custom dimensions with the units which you want to keep to create your new file. These units are : Pixels, Inches, Centimeters, Millimeters, Points and lastly, Picas.

Measurement units in Adobe Photoshop

First let’s talk about Pixels (px). Displayed on a digital device, it is smallest unit of measurement in an image, or to say, a graphic. It is also known as Picture element. A picture, text, video, an artwork have pixels combined together to make it. 1pixel is equals to 0.352777778 millimeter and a 100 pixel is equals to 1.0416666666666667 inches when in 96 DPI or dots-per-inch.

Now, the second unit, which is Inches (in). What is an inch? It is one-twelfth of a foot. An inch in centimeters is 2.54, while in millimeters it is 25.4 in 60 dots-per-inch or DPI.

Next is Centimeters or cm, a metric unit equal to one-hundredth of a meter. 1 centimeter is equal to 28 pixels in 72 DPI.

Further, lets take Millimeters or mm. It is unit of measurement which is equal to 0ne-thousandth of a meter. Converted into pixel it is 3.779528.

Point or pt is used to measure the length of a font, leading or any item on a page. It is another smallest unit of measurement, which is equals to 1/72 of an inch or 0.353 mm. In 96 DPI, a point when converted into pixel is 1.3333333333333333. Point is used for designing.

Finally, the Picas (pc). Used to represent fixed horizontal and column width, it is less than 1/6 of an inch and 1/72 of a foot. It is mostly used to design newspapers, journals, ads, magazines and newsletters. 1 pica is equals to 16 pixels.

So, a better understanding about these measurement units helps in creating a new file in Adobe Photoshop.
