You can get lazy in design, no doubt.
As a designer I have to continually strive to make sure my design choices are purpose-driven and not out of convenience or whim. There are too many distractions to chase after that weakens a design.
Apple has the luxury of building a premium brand on top of a tight ecosystem of technology. Those bedrocks give them momentum.
But purpose is always changing, so old design choices must always be considered and reconsidered. Are they the strongest they can be in this current environment? What are the emerging gaps, and how might you address them?
All is not lost for Apple, but the future is never guaranteed.
