Wishful thinking at best. To build a sustainable subscription-based publication, you need to deliver unique content to your audience. Otherwise they will go to somewhere free. News is free, so you will have to look for something else. Subscription is also not a scalable model as it is not a one-size-fits-all approach. Ultimately, display advertising and to some extent, native, work because they’re scalable. If it works for you, great, unlikely that it will work for the tens of thousands of other publications out there.
