The “common people” who performed a titanic task to keep society standing

Important Note: The names of the indicated interviewees have been changed as they wished to remain anonymous. Several employees from other chains declined an interview with Athens Live. This is indicative of the widespread terror among workers in the industry.

Sophia (not her real name) suffers from hypertension, a condition that has caused her to have light strokes in the past. She also suffers from an additional underlying health problem that requires surgery, which has been postponed due to the quarantine emergency laws. …

Julian Assange’s Franco-Spanish lawyer Juan Branco, visited Athens for a couple of days, bringing news from the south-east of London where Assange, the activist and journalist that provided an unprecedented insight into the mechanisms of power is held, in high-security Belmarsh prison.

“Wikileaks is a tiny boat sailing in the ocean of state secrets, beset on all sides by enormous ocean liners, which have the sole intention of sinking it”: these were the words Juan Branco chose to describe Wikileaks in the half-empty press conference room in the Journalists’ Union of Athens Daily Newspapers offices.

As incompatible as it may seem for a man of law, this somehow poetic introduction was, in essence, most matching with “utopian” Wikileaks activism and “beyond realistic calculations” Branco’s curriculum. A Greek Maritime Company chartered to service off-the-beaten-track islands has been found leaving islanders and tourists stranded. Despite having a contract with the Greek State, with subsidies to service routes to and from Aegean islands, it had been chartered instead in the Azores in the Atlantic.

On the small and heavenly island of Anafi that floats east of the world-famous Santorini, a passenger vessel named the Aqua Jewel has provided material for a sea of jokes. However, that humor turned into rage over the past few months, because of the vessel’s peculiar reported exodus from Greek waters in mid-June. The Anafi islanders have since had to deal with goods’ shortages, subsequently disrupted services, a loss of revenue from the tourist season. An island the size and morphology of Anafi is completely dependent on receiving incoming goods by boat since there is no airport. Additionally, the Aqua Jewel has generated bitter memories for many tourists. …
