What is a Probate?
A probate is a new member presentation show. It is when new members have just joined an NPHC organizations and have an out coming show to their family, friends, and campus. Showing that they have committed to this sorority or fraternity for a life time. These shows contain greetings, strolls, history, and the reveal.
Greeting
During probate shows new members will greet all NPHC sororities and fraternities such as Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc., Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Greeting these organization are shown out of respect because we are all apart of the same council. After each greeting the sorority or fraternity will respond with their calling showing appreciation.
Strolls
Throughout the new member presentation many dances and songs are preformed. These songs and dances are preformed to show a creative way of letting everybody know what new members have learned. Along with showing their appreciation to their big brothers and big sisters for giving them the opportunity to join the organization and for teaching the high standards of the organization. Strolling is also ingrained into our African traditional movements that we encountered from our ancestors.
History
Probate shows are based on the acknowledge that you learned about the organization you have just joined. At majority of probate shows you will see people with the same outfit on, and mask on their face. Having a mask on during your show is a way of showing discretion until you are revealed at the end. Discretion is “ the quality of behaving or speaking in such a way as to avoid causing offense or revealing private information.” The reason why mask are worn at the shows is because during your whole process you have been private about your interest within that organization. Until you are complete done with your whole process of your show and reciting all the history you have learned you are then revealed showing everybody your hard work and dedication to the chapter.
Reveal
At the end of the probate after reciting all of your Greek information you are reveal by your big brother or your big sister to the campus and in front of all your friends and family. Showing the bond that you and your sisters and brothers have made together. You will also present your new name to the audience and giving a speech showing your appreciation, dedication and gratitude towards the chapter and to your new brothers and sisters. Expressing how you are so proud to become a member of the organization and thanking those who helped you along the way.
