Day 41: 60 Letters of Gratitude
“Gratitude turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos into order, confusion into clarity…it makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow.” — Melody Beattie
Thank you for being my number one partner in crime. Granted being an only child for almost three years I was not very happy when you came along. I was not very nice to you. Thank you for loving me anyway. Thank you for never actually killing me even though you had every reason to on more than one occasion. Thank you for always trusting me. Thank you for wanting to always be around me like a good little sister would. Thank you.
Thank you for learning from my mistakes. Thank you for helping me when I made outrageous promises like my whole first paycheck for simple favors. Thank you for being the funniest person I know. Thank you for appreciating even the little things like extra clothes hangers. Thank you for being so sweet and loving where I was not. Thank you for being mommy’s masseuse. Thank you for holding it down and selling candy when we had to hustle to have lunch money. Thank you for being a true thug and going to Nancy Mosely one year longer than I could have.
Thank you for always being so much smarter than me. Thank you for your ability to articulate and develop arguments with your vast knowledge. There are often times when I know what to say but you say it for me and all I can say is thank you. Thank you for loving the world so much. Thank you for always wanting to help. Thank you for having a true servant’s heart. You give your best and your all to everything you take on. Thank you.
Thank you for being such a hard worker. You went away to school in a foreign place where you felt unwanted, you had no transportation had to walk to work and school and still managed to finish on time, you are my hero. You will always be successful because you do what others are not willing to do. Although you wanted to give up when it was time to learn cursive, you did not give up. You wanted to give up when it was time to ride without training wills but you did not give up. You wanted to give up when it was time to do multiplication but you did not give up. You are persistent despite the odds being stacked against you and that is admirable. Thank you. Thank you for never giving up.
Thank you for taking care of Ma and Hope when I left for school. I know you had to deal with a lot of things that were not fun but you did well. Thank you. Thank you for being so brave and strong. You are the strongest person I know. It is funny because you are so small which you see as a bad thing sometimes but really I think it is your best asset. People underestimate you which is their loss.
Thank you again for being so smart. We have faced so much adversity and so many problems and you were right there with me every time brainstorming how we would solve each problem. No matter how big or small it was, we always figured it out. From how can the three of us eat off ten dollars to what meal can we make with carrots and pickles to how do we take a bath with no running water. Thank you. Two minds are always better than one. Thank you for always being able to laugh through it and afterward.
Thank you for all the talks. You are so wise. I will never forget you told me to make it look easy or something to that effect when I was trying to gain my strength back from that nonsense (I will not name it because that gives it power) the doctors said I had. Thank you because every time I wanted to cry or give up because it felt too hard I remembered you saying that and I would smile or laugh and keep it moving. Thank you.
Thank you for always being so concerned and cautious. You have watched me do some crazy things. Some that could have put us in danger. I am pretty sure my love for playing with fire is the reason you do not really mess with fire. Thank you. Thank you for always finding money that is never a bad quality to have. Thank you for being the one person who was always able to save money. Hope and I would spend like nobody’s business then you would be sitting there with a hundred dollars from two Christmas past in the cards they came in. Thank you.
Thank you for being so positive and encouraging. Thank you for always dancing to my choreography even though it was not that great. Thank you for always being a real leader. Thank you for being Breezy. Thank you for all that you do. Every meal you have cooked, every time you helped me with so many petty things. Thank you. Thank you for being a superwoman. I pray that you stay blessed to maintain your positive attitude as you move on to some challenging tasks. You have some adventures ahead of you that will be hard and I pray that you never lose sight of your why. I pray that you are blessed to be a blessing to others as you always have been. I am forever grateful to have such an amazing sister. I am sure that I did not touch on one percent of the things I am grateful for you for. Thank you.
I think if you make the heart green they give you a cookie.
I could be wrong. =]
