The Rescue Dog
Like many others before me, I wanted a dog. However, also like many others, I don’t want to support dog breeders as most of them are irresponsible. So, what do I do? Go to a website, petfinder.com now, this website shows you any pet you could ever want, in your area. These pets are the ones in shelters or rescue agencies. These dogs are the ones with stories that will rip your heart out and leave you hating humanity. At least, it did for me as I saw her. The dog I was destined to have from day one. The dog who would soon become my companion and shadow, following my every footstep. But, that’s getting ahead in the story.
She had one picture that caught my attention. A cute little black lab laying on a gray couch. I’m not sure why she drew my attention, out of all the exotic breeds in my area, why this dog? I read about her, she was found a few months old with her ears already cut off. I felt terrible for her. This is the dog that needs a home, the one who deserves it, who deserves to be pampered and loved every second of every day.
Now, I will not lie, when I first met her it was not love at first sight. She didn’t have the personality that jumped out at you, she was shy and stuck with the woman who brought her in. But slowly my heart opened up to this shy baby who needed a forever home. I adopted her the first time I saw her in person. For the first few weeks, she was scared of everything, loud noises, sudden movements, new sights, and sounds. But over time, she has become the best dog I have ever met. She is polite, and will not go somewhere unless she is invited. She is silly and will ring the bells hung from the door handle until they fall off (literally). She is sweet and gives a kiss or two at a time. She is patient and does incredibly well with children. She is perfect, and, her name is Luna.
Now, all of this seems pointless, I’m sure. But this is a blog I hope to grow. I want to talk about why you should shop from a rescue or shelter, but that’s another blog post entirely.
For right now, I’ll leave you with this. Don’t count out the dogs who need a home the most. Don’t turn down a dog because they look aggressive, they could be the sweetest of dogs. Don’t deny a dog with a bad history, an incredible future. These are the dogs that deserve love the most, and I will forever advocate for them.
