Dark Themed Apps
The application I have chosen to prototype is the Mail app. While there are numerous mail apps out there, to find one that suits your needs is very difficult, and one that looks equally good is almost impossible. And thus, this mail app is my way of addressing that issue. I chose a dark theme as it looks not only elegant but is also “Night Friendly”. It won’t burn your eyes if you want to check your male late at night.
I initiated the process by searching online for some prototypes made by other UI/UX designers, and I clubbed the best features of each. The task bar on the left is always on screen, except when viewing the contents of an email. This is for ease of access to the different tabs one might want to view. Why now? Because phone screens are not as small as they used to be a few years ago, phones go up to 6.3 inches diagonally, which gives enough space to the user to view the sidebar as well as the emails.
Each page starts off with an almost black background, which is complimented by the other colours used for the selected tab, i.e. Inbox or Sent Mails, and the colour of any new/unread mail. While some emails are very short and brief, others may be pages long with important instruction or something else, thus only the email view page hides the sidebar and instead contains a back icon on the top left. Each Attachment is listed below with an options button to download or view, along with the size of the file.
Not many developers have incorporated the dark theme in their apps even though people find it aesthetically appealing and “cool” now-a-days, and by starting to do so, we hope others will follow and make their apps look much better.
