Problem statement for Exun’s Creative Event

Introduction

The ride sharing experience across the world has become commoditised. Uber wants to ensure that the rider is no longer at the mercy of the driver’s playlist, and instead gets full control over the in-car entertainment.

Uber wants to offer advanced car controls, choice of personalised content such as music, movies, news, and also let riders control the air-conditioning through mounted tablets. Once a ride begins, riders can get full control of the in-car experience on the screen mounted.

The company wants to provide a fully connected interactive experience to the user, and you’re being hired to build this.

What do I have to do?

Your task is to design different parts of Uber’s revolutionary new in-car entertainment system. They have chosen to impose no restrictions on your product whatsoever — any research, monetary, and development requirements will be readily taken care of by them.

The company wants to amaze the people of India, and that means it wants you to let your imagination run wild.

Design (Classes 9th to 11th)

Your task is to design the user interface for Uber’s revolutionary new in-car entertainment system. How would you design a product to provide a fully connected interactive experience to the users? Please communicate your concepts and design process using any tools you prefer in 3–5 slides. This may include sketches, wireframes, prototypes, mind maps, etc.

Please make sure your solution includes a home screen (introductory visual interface displayed on the tablet), from which the rider is able to access particular functions.

If you’re versed in something like Marvel App (www.marvelapp.com), extra points for making working prototype. Oh, and try to design an interface which is in coordination with the current design of Uber’s rider app. Consistency is the key to good design, after all.

AND

Design (Classes 6th to 8th)

Your task is to design a product advertisement poster introducing Uber.

Why should people use Uber’s app? How much do their services cost? How is it better than other services? What makes their service stand out?

Uber wants you to sell their brand. Make a poster that looks good.

Here’s an example of a product/app advertisement poster.

Note: You may use Uber rider app screenshots in your poster.

Web Development (Classes 9th to 11th)

Your task is to develop Uber’s revolutionary new in-car entertainment system in the form of a web-based application: an application in which the system (or user interface) runs in a web browser.

Please make sure your solution includes a home screen (introductory visual interface), from which the rider is able to access particular functions, of which at least three features (of your choice) should be working (functional).

Oh, and try to design an interface which is in coordination with the current design of Uber’s rider app. Consistency is the key to good design, after all.

AND

Web Development (Classes 6th to 8th)

Your task is to design a product showcase website introducing Uber’s revolutionary new in-car entertainment system.

Uber wants you to design a landing page, a page for customer reviews, a contact form, and an interactive navigation bar, from which the customer is able to read about particular features/services of the new product.

Here’s an example of a product showcase website.

Motion Graphics

Your task is to advertise Uber’s revolutionary new in-car entertainment system by means of video. How would you advertise a product and make it stand out? What makes your product revolutionary?

While Uber doesn’t want you to design a detailed user-interface for their system, making a basic user-interface and including that in the advertisement video is a must.

Oh, and try to create a video which is in coordination with Uber’s current branding identity design. Consistency is the key to good design, after all.

Audio

Your task is to create an audio track for Uber’s revolutionary new in-car entertainment system. What would you want to listen to, while relaxing on the back seat of your cab, after a long day at work?

Uber wants your to create something that people of this era would love to listen to while relaxing; something soothing, something catchy, something not-so-mainstream.

3D Modeling

Your task is to design a three-dimensional model of Uber’s revolutionary new in-car entertainment system mounted on the car’s seat. Where do you think the product would mount best? At what height? How big?

Uber wants you to design a product that people would love to use.

Note: The company is not asking you to design the car’s interior, but instead, a close-up model of the screen mounted on the car’s seat.

What am I being judged on?

  • Originality: The more imaginative the better.
  • Creativity: Don’t be afraid of letting your imagination flow.
  • Aesthetic Appeal: No one likes pink cursive text against a black background. Please design something that is good to look at.
  • Utilizing Resources: How good you are at what you used to make it.

How much can I take from the internet?

You may use the internet for stock images and stock videos. Using templates and copying designs defeats the purpose and is prohibited. However, you may cite the source of the design in the bibliography if you have to absolutely use it.

How do I begin?

  • What is the first thing that comes to my mind when I think of this?
  • What would I want from such a product (or service) if I owned it?
  • What would be the unique features of this product (or service)?
  • What all could I do with it?

Based on the answers you get to these questions, write a small description of what you think the product (or service) is all about. Most importantly, don’t let these questions limit your submission.

What software can I use?

  • Design: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Sketch
  • Web Development: Sublime Text, Atom, jQuery and JS plugins, PHP, Node.js, Prepros
  • Motion Graphics: Adobe After Effects, Final Cut Pro
  • Audio: Audacity, FL Studio, Logic Pro X
  • 3D Design: Maya, Blender 3D, 3DS Max, Google Sketchup, Cinema 4D

If you wish to use a software program not listed above, please notify us and we will let you know if you can use it to make your submission.

How do I submit?

  • Compress your project files (or source code) into a single file. Set its filename to your name, class and, most importantly, the name of your event. For instance, if your name is John Doe, and you’re from XI-Y, participating in the design event, your filename should be “johndoe_11y_design”.
  • All submissions must contain a readme.txt file with information about the software used to create the submission. If there is anything you would like to tell us about your submission, you may do so in that.
  • Videos may be uploaded to YouTube with the privacy set to ‘Unlisted’.
  • All submissions must be sent by email to elite2017@exunclan.com before 11:59 am on 07 May 2017.

Anything else?

  • Students submitting websites can send us a URL of their submission. However, we also require that you send us all your source files in a zip folder. We will view your websites locally.
  • Students submitting a user-interface design should send us JPEGs/PNGs of their submission. Also, you must send us all your source files (Photoshop, Illustrator, or Sketch files) in a zip folder.
  • Students submitting a 3D models should send us JPEGs/PNGs of their submission. Also, you must send us all your source files.
  • Students submitting audio should send us .MP3s of their submission. Also, you must send us all your source files.
  • Please note that participation is strictly individual. Team entries will not be considered.

I have another question. Whom can I contact?

Please feel free to contact us at exunclan@gmail.com or on Exun Clan’s Facebook Page with any questions or queries you may have.
