During our transition to an Agile approach, our gaming studio recently brought on board an experienced scrum master to guide us through the process. Being their first time in a gaming studio and with most of our team members new to a fully agile environment, we conducted individual sessions to familiarize ourselves with our respective roles. When it was my turn, the scrum master asked me to explain the role of a game producer. I anticipated this question and understood the importance of providing a comprehensive answer that would help the scrum master grasp the significance of the role within our organization’s unique context. As our conversation progressed, we delved into the complexities of various key roles in our studio, such as Project Managers, Product Managers, and Product Owners. It became evident that the role of the game producer brings a unique set of challenges and considerations to the table, which can be both intriguing and challenging to comprehend for those unfamiliar with the gaming industry.

Scrum Master: I’m curious to learn more about the game producer role in our gaming studio. Could you provide some insights?

Me: Absolutely! As a game producer, my main focus is overseeing the entire game development process. I have three key areas of responsibility: the product, the people, and the process. I work closely with the product/business side to ensure that our game aligns with market demands and resonates with players. I empower our team members by providing resources and guidance to bring the game to life. And finally, I optimize our development processes, streamline workflows, and ensure successful completion of the game.

Scrum Master: It seems like the responsibilities of a game producer can be divided among other roles in different contexts, like product managers, department leads, and project managers. How does the game producer fit into this framework?

Me: Ah, Ah! I understand what the confusion is. You’re right that some of the responsibilities of a game producer can be distributed among other roles in different contexts. However, the game producer acts as the ultimate coordinator, bringing all these roles together for seamless collaboration.

Let me give you an example. Imagine we’re developing a new game. The product manager sets the overall vision and strategy for the game based on market research and player needs. As a game producer, I work closely with the product manager to ensure the game’s development aligns with this vision.

We also have department leads who oversee specific teams like art, design, and programming. They manage their respective departments and ensure smooth execution of tasks. Here, as a game producer, I collaborate closely with department leads, providing guidance, resources, and support to overcome any challenges they face. I ensure everyone is on the same page and working towards a common goal.

Now, project managers come into play. They handle project planning, scheduling, and resource management. As a game producer, I work closely with project managers to ensure the game development stays on track, milestones are met, and resources are allocated efficiently. I also coordinate with them to address any potential roadblocks or bottlenecks that may arise during development.

Essentially, I bridge the gaps and facilitate effective communication and collaboration by working closely with all these roles. I serve as a central point of contact, ensuring everyone is aligned, deadlines are met, and the game development progresses smoothly. I’m the go-to person for any issues or concerns, keeping everyone on track and focused on delivering a successful game.

Scrum Master: Okay, so you help the team overcome their challenges and facilitate/ guide them to success. Isn’t that what I, as a scrum master, am supposed to do? Also, are you saying that a game producer can only work effectively with a project manager or product manager?

Me: Absolutely! As a scrum master, your role is indeed about helping the team overcome challenges and guiding them to success. We’re on the same page there.

Regarding the game producer role, we bring a different flavor to the mix. While you focus on the agile framework and process, I take on a broader perspective and act as the bridge between various roles, including project and product managers.

Having dedicated project and product managers can supercharge the effectiveness of a game producer’s work. Project managers excel in planning, scheduling, and resource management, keeping everything on track. Product managers are visionaries who define what the game should be, based on market research and customer needs.

When we have project managers and product managers in the picture, the game producer collaborates closely with them, tapping into their specialized expertise and ensuring smooth coordination. But hey, in some cases, especially in smaller studios or organizations, the game producer might need to wear multiple hats and take on those project and product management responsibilities themselves.

So, while there may be some overlap in responsibilities, the game producer role goes beyond that of a traditional product owner, encompassing a wider range of coordination and leadership tasks to ensure the success of game development.

Scrum Master: I’m starting to see the bigger picture now. But how does the game producer fit into our Agile context?

Me: Ah, Agile, the wild and wonderful world we live in. The game producer doesn’t neatly fit into one traditional Agile role. They’re more like a mixtape of responsibilities! They’ve got a taste of being a product owner, shaping the vision. They’re a bit of a scrum master, helping the team overcome challenges. They dabble in project management, keeping things on track. They’re even a stakeholder wrangler, keeping everyone happy.

Scrum Master: Wow, they really do wear many hats!

Me: That’s right! The game producer is adaptable. They can switch roles as needed, like a chameleon in the Agile jungle. They’re flexible, ready to take on whatever is necessary to ensure successful game development. And with you as our amazing scrum master, we’ll make a killer team in this Agile adventure!

Scrum Master: I’m pumped! Let’s rock this Agile game development together!

Me: That’s the spirit! Together, we’ll create gaming magic and bring our awesome ideas to life. Let the games begin!

In conclusion, the role of a game producer fits harmoniously within the Agile framework, complementing other vital roles in a gaming studio. They serve as the ultimate coordinator, bringing together product managers, project managers, and scrum masters for effective collaboration and successful game development. As our organization embraces a complete Agile platform, I am committed to providing you with more conversations and insights that will shed light on how the game producer role evolves and adapts in this dynamic environment. Together, we will unlock the full potential of Agile methodologies and continue to deliver extraordinary gaming experiences. Stay tuned for more exciting updates on the journey of the game producer in our Agile transformation!
