The Future of AI

Artificial intelligence is a powerful concept that can shape the future in various ways ranging from the bad, such as robots inevitably taking over, to the good, a collaborative work force of AI and humans. When we live in a world with corrupt governments and people, it’s hard to not fear what may occur when AI advances a lot further — the possibilities are vast. A more extreme case of a negative outcome that comes to mind is the production of smart, autonomous weapons. A hundred years from now, the use of artificial intelligence will become accessible to more people, and could increase the likelihood of abusing the power behind AI’s uses. Now while this fear is a specific example, the overarching concept is the idea that society will begin to put too much trust and reliance on AI as its use becomes more widespread.

We have already dealt with cases where an AI has made decisions that lead to faulty results, such as badly predicting a criminal’s chance to re-offending or predicting someone’s chance to offend based off of zip codes. Given whatever data and bias wanted, AI can really be used for whatever one pleases. On a more sci-fi note, earlier this year, the well acclaimed PS4 game, Detroit: Become Human, came out and accurately posed the fears of very advanced, cognitive AI. The game features androids that essentially “go astray” and begin to demand more rights, inducing a war to occur. Whilst this does sound very extreme and far fetched, it still does present the idea of what may happen if an AI becomes too advanced too quickly.

While there are reasons to be weary of the future of AI, there are also many great advancements that can occur due to the proper use of AI. A lot of personal benefit can take place such as individuals having daily assistants that can alleviate extraneous tasks and give advice to the users. AI assistants in hospitals can work alongside doctors and surgeons to make quick and accurate decisions. On a larger scale, the use of AI could save businesses millions of dollars with very quick and beneficial decision making when utilizing the hundreds of years of data at its disposal.

My hope is that AI can become an integral part of the medical field, where it is used in hospitals to be a persona that is with the patients in need 24/7 and can adjust room conditions to the patients needs, alert doctors, and keep people company. Artificial intelligence can, as mentioned earlier, also be used to work alongside the doctors. With the use of extensive data sets and fast processing, AI can provide day to day assistance in people’s personal lives and in professional settings as well. When looking at the full picture, the possibilities really do feel endless with the proper collaboration between human and artificial intelligence.
