A side note here is that the adoption of dating apps has made the process of exploring more efficient: you flip on an app and suddenly you have a few dates lined up for the week. So we seem to be moving towards a more exploratory dating culture—high volumes of first dates, frequent break ups, serious relationships (exploitation) put off until later in life.
One could also make the argument that our dating reward metric has become flawed. With the explosion of first dates, it becomes very difficult to say whether one is better than the other — thus our reward metric might appear similar across many of our first dates. Such a result would also favor an exploratory strategy.
