Sofia and Miranda

A touch of lip gloss, few strokes of blusher on the cheek bones and a final dab of compact powder, now it all looks perfect. I finally get to see the mirror after an hour’s patience, when my daughter started dressing me up. “You will look like a princess mamma”, was her statement. Well, I must say, I do look, err..dressed up. Her eyes are eagerly looking up to mine, waiting for an answer. “Gosh! is this me? I do look great”, I say and that made her day.

Her face lit up to a 100 watts and she said, “ okay! now I have to get ready, please take care of your clothes and don’t spoil them until I get ready”. Those were her orders for me. I smile back and obey her order, moving to a chair beside the dressing table, while she has taken the seat in front of the mirror. I watch her with delight as she carefully does her face and gets ready.

My mind wanders to the day I first held her in my arms, her first touch, her first steps and her first words. My heart wells up when I realize how years have passed and I suddenly jolt back to reality when she says, “let’s go! we are getting late”. My seven year old going on seventeen, says the precise words I tell her. I realize how children absorb what adults say and mirror it back to us.

Holding her little hand, we leave for the theme birthday party for mom and daughters, where she is Sofia the first and I am her mother, Queen Miranda. We may not be part of any royalty in real life, but truly, she is my princess forever.
