Proper Brushing Technique

In order for you to have optimal dental hygiene, you must first master the art of the brushing technique. Often, just scrubbing around your teeth with some toothbrush and toothpaste is not nearly enough to prevent bad breath, cavities, and gum disease. It is surprising how many adults don’t practice proper brushing habits, most of them time because they were never formally and consistently taught how. It is important to get good dental hygiene practices started at a young age so that it is ingrained into your child long into their adulthood. Monitoring a few factors may help perfect brushing technique for you and your child.

First, it is very important that you purchase a proper toothbrush. While you can always consult your personal dentist for the best brush advice, many experts have can agree these three factors. Soft-bristled brushes are the safest choice as they are less likely to cause damage to teeth and gums, especially when it comes to vigorous brushers. Secondly, you want to make sure that the brush is the proper size for their mouth. It must be small enough to reach the tiny crevices in the back of your child’s mouth, as well as have a handle that can comfortably fit in their hands for optimal gripping. Finally, when it comes to picking out an electric or disposable toothbrush, it comes down to sheer personal preference. Studies have found that their is no significant difference between cleaning performance of the two types. Although, it might be better to get the cheaper disposable if your child tends to drop or lose their brush often.

Once they have their toothbrush ready, you may want to set a timer. For a healthy smile, it is recommended that your child brushes for at least two minutes. It might be helpful to have a timer ready or even find a song that is roughly two minutes and have your child brush while they listen.

Have them hold their toothbrush as a 45-degree angle against the gumline and gently brush the outside of their upper and lower teeth with a back and forth motion. After the outer surfaces are done, they are going to want to gently brush their molars, making sure to reach all of those chewing surfaces. Next, they should brush the insides of the flat, front teeth with an up and down stroke. Make sure that your child doesn’t neglect to scrub around crowns, fillings, loose teeth, or even missing teeth. Once all of their teeth have been brushed and the 2-minutes is up, they can brush their tongue to help eliminate bacteria and bad breath.
