I like that you point to the pacing providing the reader a different, more purposeful and perhaps thoughtful approach to the text because of how it's laid out or that the images help to create a kind of pause but also a more active participation than maybe the passive vieweing of a film, for example.
I agree with you about the surface symbolism that helps young readers get used to analyzing texts in a particular way, but one commentary I read by Maureen Corrigan suggested that in a way, such reading or misreading ruins Gatsby for many young readers who never revisit the text.
