Written Plain
An arid landscape flows beneath, with a starless sky above, as I peer in all directions, looking for signs of life to no avail. Nothing but black pumice stone and the inky expanse. Geometric planes shift, and I’m looking out at the entirety of my country, overwhelmed with sadness.
And then, a piercing pin of light. Small at first, it grows in luminance, driving away the shadows. Clear water bubbles from the center, a prismic stream intensifying the brightness while providing relief to the scorched land around it. Shooting beams of light arc across, like arms, reaching in all directions. Upon their destination, they crash through the rock. Replication ensues — endless supplies of light and water creating fountains that eventually pepper the entire field of view.
Who am I? What am I supposed to be doing with my life?
These were the questions I hurled at my ceiling night after night for years on end. I just wanted an answer. Something, anything, to give me a sense of direction. To reassure me that there was something more that I was meant to do. To tell me the reason I’m alive.
Sound familiar at all? I have a feeling I’m not searching alone.
Finding ones true identity is a common desire resting in the core of each person. It drives us to seek. We look to society for the roadmap. We look to others for validation. We clothe ourselves in the seemingly comfortable that culture provides, tricking ourselves into thinking This is it, this is me, all the while knowing that what we’re wearing doesn’t quite fit.
Here’s two things I know: You have a seed of greatness inside of you. Your birth sent ripples throughout the heavens because of how truly amazing and gifted you are. You have a reason for being alive so unique that even the snowflakes are jealous, and you are meant to use that purpose to change the world. Our world needs people who stoke their internal fires, unafraid of discovering who they truly are and why they’re alive today.
Enter Devoted. Being “devoted” to something goes beyond just being “all in.” The word itself points to running after ones consecrated purpose. Being devoted is focusing on discovering and living out the greatness that makes you YOU. Devoted is a work in progress, and will be for awhile, but it’s essential that we call people to rediscover their true selves and to walk that journey with them. Starting this process is how we will start setting lights in the darkness, how we will start watering the desert.
To help you see that you’re not alone, that this is a journey literally every other person is walking with you, we’re going to be sharing a series of posts from people who are at different points in their own journeys of running after their individual purposes. Called “Written Plain,” this series will feature stories from people who are in the process of discovering what they were made to do and how they’re currently living out that vision. We’ll be posting every couple of weeks, so make sure to follow us for your dose of inspiration.
It’s time to step outside the comfort zone.
Let’s go,
~M
