Catan — a game of life

The game began with a roll of dice. Everyone wanted to go first to occupy the best spot and race to the top. But if life was so simple, I wouldn’t be writing about it, would I? It kind of resembles with how people are born different with different set of resources — some are rich and laid-back while some might be from not a well off family but hardworking. Imagine if people who got to go first getting it all. If life was so simple, I wouldn’t be writing about it, would I?
The game has resources —Brick, Hay, Ore, Sheep, Wood and another hidden resource called time (number of turns). As the game proceeds, time (turn) is converted to a different set of resource, something unique for every player — depending on what people decided to bet on. But again, if betting was easy, I I wouldn’t be writing about it, would I? We all chose where to spend time. With friends, family, working (subjective), networking, etc. but with passe of time, we are actually betting on those resources which will enrich our life as the game of life progresses. Imagine a singular resource which could bring happiness to all our lives. If life was so simple, I wouldn’t be writing about it, would I?
The third and the most important part of the game is trading. People trade resources, risk and even their future. One man’s trash can be other man’s treasure and if people co-operate, it can build cities if not settlements. But what is the most important part of trade? Influence — by others. That’s where it gets dirty. When perceived image does not match with the actual one (what’s that?), disagreements happen. People shout, cheat, cry foul and blame to influence the decisions in their favor. This gives life it’s flavors. We trade out resources in terms of time, hard-work, network, risk etc. A co-operative strategy always brings benefit to both parties [Link]. This makes game more fun and interesting for long time.
Ultimately, the game is over when one of the player reaches maximum points (10). People who win find joy in winning while for others it’s about time well spent. Ultimately, if the game is played right it always ends with smiling faces. This game is an excellent sampled representative of life. Isn’t life all about that — being happy and fulfilled? But if life was so simple, I wouldn’t be writing about it, would I?
(PS. I am skipping the fallout of number 7, development cards etc, because me is too lazy :P)
