吉岡徳仁によるカルティエ特別展「Cartier Time Art」とインスタレーション「The Gate」
吉岡徳仁が2011年より手がけるカルティエのウォッチメイキング特別展「Cartier Time Art」。その第３回が中国の上海当代芸術博物館 -POWER STATION OF ART- にて7/19より開催されます。そこで今回はこの展示と、新たに加えられたインスタレーション「The Gate」を紹介します。
The Gate
15万本ものファイバーを吊るすことで生み出された透明なレイヤーにより、広大な空間全体はひとつのレンズのような効果が生まれ、来場者に次元を越えるイメージを映し出します。
この光に満ちた幻想的な光景のなかに、カルティエのコンセプトウォッチID OneとID Two、そして透明なアクリルの固まりで生み出されたレンズのようなオブジェが鎮座しています。ドーナツ状のレンズは人や時計、周りの姿を歪め、まるで時を越える未来のゲートへと導かれるような感覚を味わいます。
今展覧会は151点のクラシカルコレクションに始まり、20のムーブメント、16点のメティエダール、前述のID Oneといったコンセプトウォッチなど15のモダンピースを含むカルティエウォッチコレクション過去最大数の一般公開を実現しています。
長い歴史と未来に対するアヴァンギャルドの空想。対極にある二つを融合させ、カルティエらしい美しさを見い出そうとする野心的な展示は上海当代芸術博物館にて10/12まで開催されています。

1. 今回カルティエのタイムピースコレクションの展覧会のアートディレクションをされておりますが、プロジェクトのきっかけについてお聞かせ下さい。
カルティエとの最初のプロジェクトは2009年に展覧会ディレクターとして参加させていただいた、カルティエコレクション特別展「”Story of…” — Memory of Cartier creations～めぐり逢う美の記憶」（東京国立博物館表敬館）です。この展覧会では、カルティエの作品ひとつひとつに宿るストーリーをコンセプトとした展覧会を考えました。
それから2年後の2011年より、カルティエタイムピースを過去最多数展示する「Cartier Time Art」展にディレクターとして参加させていただいています。カルティエの職人たちのスピリット、長い歴史と未来に対するアヴァンギャルドの発想を融合させることで、カルティエらしい美しさを引き出し、カルティエの時計作りの核心に迫る展覧会構成となっています。
2. タイトルについてお聞かせください。
Time Art － 時間そのものが芸術である。
時計という物質的なことではなく、時間という文化そのものをつくり出しているというところに一番重要なカルティエの価値が存在するのではないでしょうか。このタイトルには、世界中の人々にそのようなメッセージを伝えたいという想いを込めています。
3. ディレクションにおけるコンセプトをお聞かせください。
「カルティエの果てしない美の追求と情熱が時を生み出す。職人の手で実現された完璧な調和が時間そのものを芸術へと磨き上げる。」
時間は、光、風、香り、空気と同じように、目で見ることも、この手で掬いとることもできないけれど、わたしたちの日常に深く、その美しい息を潜ませています。
物質社会では、体験により耕された時が、価値を持ちます。
新たなるカルティエの時の鼓動が、それぞれの心に刻み込まれ、豊かなる時間を紡いでいく展覧会にしたい、そう考えています。
4. 会場構成について。巡回展第一回目はチューリッヒ、ベルリーヴ美術館、第二回目はシンボリックな構造を特徴とするシンガポールのMarina Bay Sands, Art Science Museumにて開催されていますが、今回のPower Station of Art の会場では、何か新たな要素は追加されたのでしょうか？
チューリッヒでは歴史的な建物の中に、歴史と未来のコントラストを感じられるようなテクノロジーを使った展示を発表しました。シンガポールでは、特徴的な美術館の形状に合わせ、まるで時計が刻む時間のなかを回遊するかのように展示し、最後のコンセプトウォッチの部屋では、まるで時の渦のような、何万本ものストローで出来た作品である「 Tornado 」というインスタレーションの中に、ID oneを展示しました。
今回は、コンセプトウォッチの空間に、ファイバーのインスタレーション作品である「 The Gate 」を展示します。15万本ものファイバーによって生み出される透明なレイヤーが、空間全体をレンズ化することで、次元を越えるイメージを映し出します。人々は、この巨大なレンズによって、時を超える未来のゲートへと導かれるでしょう。
この新たなコンセプトウォッチのID1とID2が表現されているインスターレション「 The Gate 」は、歴史から未来へ突き進む入口となり、またそれは訪れた人々がそれぞれ得る体験によって、形成されるでしょう。
5. Power Station of Art の広大な展示スペースに合わせて、どのようにデザインすることを計画しましたか？PSAの建物と本展の二つの間にはどのような化学作用が起こりますか？
PSAの建築物で好きな点は、ダイナミックなスペースだけではなく、昔の発電所の頃の記憶、つまり長い歴史の断片が建築そのものに残っているところ、それが一番の魅力ではないかと思います。ある時は歴史的な一面を、また、ある時は、未来を象徴するかのような一面をみせる、とても興味深く、パワーがある空間です。それは、まるで「長い歴史」と「未来に対するアヴァンギャルドの発想 」という、対極的な二つの存在を併せもつ、カルティエの美しさのようです。今回の展覧会では、互いがもつ「過去と未来」という関係性がリンクし、共鳴するような、そんな空間になるのではないかと思います。

1. Please describe how you became to direct this exhibition for Cartier.
It was in 2009 that I first worked with Cartier. They held an exhibition entitled “Story of…”- Memory of Cartier creations at Tokyo National Museum, Hyoeikan Gallery, which I was invited as a director. My approach for the scenography for the exhibition was to bring out and enhance the beauty of Cartier by showing the stories breathed within each pieces.
Two years has passed since then, and I am participating, as an art director, at “Cartier Time Art,” an exceptional exhibition that presents the largest number of Cartier timepieces ever displayed in public. The concept behind the exhibition is to merge the spirits of Cartier’s craftsmen, a long history, and avant-garde ideas for the future, to highlight Cartier’s unique beauty, and to take visitors on a journey to the heart of Cartier watch making.
2. What is the meaning behind the exhibition title “Time Art”?
Time Art — Time is art.
I believe that the essence of Cartier’s value lies not at the material level, yet within the fact that their creation actually makes culture of time itself.This message is inherent in the exhibition title.
3. Please describe the concept lining under this direction.
Cartier creates time in an endless pursuit of beauty. The perfect harmony instilled by Cartier’s craftsmen refines time itself to an art.
Time
Like light, wind, scent, and air, we can neither see time nor hold it, yet its beautiful rhythm beats throughout each day of our lives.
In today’s material world, time nurtured by experience has value.
I hope their experience here will implant Cartier’s new time beat in visitors’ hearts, and enrich each life.
4. Do you change your design to adjust different venues? Are there any “specially tailored” factors for this exhibition in PSA?
At the exhibition in Zurich, the contrast between history and future was expressed by using the technology in the historical architecture. When in Singapore, the watches were represented as if traveling time along with the characteristic form of museum. In the end of journey, the last room for concept watch exhibited the ID one in tens of thousands of straw installation which was imagined like a whirl of time.
This time, the fiber installation called “ The Gate “ will be presented in the concept watch room. Layers of transparent fibers alter the whole room to a lens and allude image that transcends dimensions. 150,000 of transparent fibers are affected by the light and the enormous lens take people to the gate of the future.
ID one and ID two are exhibited and expressed in this installation: “The Gate”. This installation will be the entrance to the future from the history and will be formed by the experiences of visitors.
5. How do you plan your exhibition design according to exhibition room 7A of Power Station of Art? What are the chemical between PSA building and this exhibition?
In addition to its dynamic space, the most attractive aspect of PSA is that the fragment of memory and the long history as of the power plant has been still remained in the building. While PSA introduces us the historical phase, they also present their futuristic expressions, which make PSA quite interesting and powerful space. This is like the beauty of Cartier which is based on the combination of two opposite ideas: “long history” and “the avant-garde approach for the future”.
I think that the relationship of “past and future” for both PSA and Cartier will be linked and resonance each other in this exhibition.
