Last week, news of famed celebrity Demi Lovato overdosing hit major news publications and media outlets. Lovato had openly revealed her struggle with addiction to the public in recent years. In 2010, she underwent rehab to deal with her addictions. In June of this year, Demi released a song called “Sober” which revealed that she has relapsed 6 times. Lovato has made her trials and success in recovery very public. Once, she had this to say about recovery, “You just have to take it one day at a time; some days are easier than others’ and some days you forget about using and drinking, but for me I work on my physical health, which is important. But my mental health as well”.

Demi Lovato is a part of a growing community of people who relapse after going through treatment. According to recent statistics released at drugsabuse.com, “⅔ of people in recovery from addiction relapse within weeks to months of beginning addiction treatment”. Another statistic says, “85 percent of people relapse and return to drug use within a year after treatment”.

With these staggering numbers. The question which remains is how can someone truly recover from drug and alcohol addiction without dealing with the ramifications of relapsing. Because as Demi Lovato showed us it doesn’t matter if you’re an International celebrity or a cashier at Walmart. Relapsing is a serious problem and it can be deadly.

Many recovering addicts will tell you that surrounding yourself with the right people will help you while navigating through recovery. Having a proper plan is essential as well. These are just a few tips to help someone while they’re on the road to recovery.
