Photo Of The Week

This week, Munster travelled to Worcester to play their only preseason friendly match this year. It was a special match for Munster fans because both Peter Stringer and Donncha O’Callaghan, two Munster legends who now play for Worcester, lined out against Munster. Both players went on a video trip down memory lane on Warriors TV to mark the occasion.

I was taking pitch-side photos at the match for the MRSC and it was great to see both of them in a red jersey again, even if it wasn’t a Munster one! The match was intense for a preseason and Munster pulled away from an excellent Worcester side only in the latter stages of the match.

After the match both Donners and Strings came out to greet both the Worcester and Munster supporters, and Peter stayed out for about half an hour taking selfies with fans. The photo above is of Peter’s signature service pass from the ruck. A fellow MRSC photographer pointed out to me that Peter had a tribute to Axel written on his wristband for the match, which can be seen in the photo above.

You can see the rest of my photos from the Worcester V Munster match here.

In this week’s post: P-Values, gated reverb, React licence, spy sounds, Google manager tools, misconceptions, prioritisation, The Defenders, Batman Beyond, the eclipse and orange peels!

Each Friday I share some of the best things I encounter, from the internet mostly but also from real life! Hopefully what I find interesting will also be interesting to you :-)

P-Values Aren’t What They Used To Be

In research and statistics, differences or changes between multiple sets of data are designated statistically significant if they result in a p-value of 0.05 or less. In simple terms, this means that the difference would only happen by chance 5% of the time.

This Quartz article describes how p-values were defined by R.A. Fisher in 1925, based on the work of Guinness brewer William Gosset. The article also describes that 0.05 significance is now regarded as insufficient and a new wave in the scientific community recommends measuring significance using p-values of 0.005 or less.

Gated Reverb

Check out the interesting video below about gated reverb, also known as the sound of the 80’s, accidentally discovered by Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins.

React BSD+Patents Licence

This is a jarring article by Raúl Kripalani about Facebook’s new BSD+Patents licensing it is rolling out for their projects, including the React, their javascript frontend framework. The BSD+Patents fine-print takes a hardline on guarding Facebook against any patent assertion by anyone using their licence. As Raúl describes, this could potentially block a startup’s acquisition by a big player company, because such a purchase would render any other patent assertions by the company against Facebook illegal.

Spying With Sound

Researchers at The University of Washington have demonstrated the use of acoustic pulses hidden in music to monitor physical movement within an environment.

Managing, The Google Way

Google have released a set of tools used by managers in the company use to “make work better”. The re:Work blog includes an extensive list of steps and tools such as manager feedback surveys, a career conversation worksheet and a meeting agenda template.

Myths & Misconceptions

This is a nice interactive site by Geekwrapped that shed light on 100 myths and misconceptions such as cowboy hats are an effect of marketing and helmets on viking horns were invented by Wagner for his opera Der Ring des Nibelungen.

Prioritisation

This is an excellent article by Taylor Pearson detailing how to use a spreadsheet and formula based approach to prioritise projects that have the best chance of a significant payoff.

Orange Peel Fertiliser

A deal in Costa Rica 17 years ago made arrangements for 12,000 metric tons of orange peels to be dumped in a deforested area. Princeton researcher have now detailed how effective the orange peels have been and rejuvenating the growth of the effected area.

TV Review: The Defenders

Having obediently watched every episode of the Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist individual Netflix shows, needless to say I was very much anticipating The Defenders. It doesn’t disappoint. While the first 2 episodes update us methodically on the latest of each character at a somewhat slow pace, we eventually see decent powered action in episode 3.

From then on, the show nicely weaves almost every character from the Netflix Marvel universe into the storyline. The show delivers on everything you might expect between the characters and does a good job at avoiding becoming an Avengers-Lite. I also enjoyed the subtle cinematography techniques used to differentiate the scenes, such as the signature character colour tints and background music.

Comic Review: Batman Beyond - Rise Of The Demon

This week, Batman Beyond Rebirth #11 concluded the recent Rise Of The Demon storyline (issues #6–11). For those who are not familiar with Batman Beyond, it began as an animated TV show in 1999. The show is set decades into the future where an elderly Bruce Wayne, too old to serve as Batman, recruits a younger dark knight called Terry McGinnis to take over. The show ended in 2001 but took its place alongside Batman The Animated Series as a cult classic.

The latest story arc written by Dan Jurgens, Rise Of The Demon, sees the league of assassins re-enter Gotham city, culminating in a huge face-off in the later issues. I really liked this story arc because it reminded me very much of the TV show. All the Batman Beyond futuristic “schway” references are there along with plenty of historical Batman nods, and the story progresses with the familiar twists and turns before tying everything up at the end.

Bernard Chang’s clean artwork and mixed granularity layouts carry the story extremely well and Marcelo Maiolo’s colouring sets the futuristic landscape perfectly. Some of my favourite panels are the fight sequences where the background and foreground colouring coupled with the narrow panel layouts do a great job at emphasising motion and suggesting focus.

The Rise Of The Demon story arc will be available from January in the Batman Beyond Rebirth Vol. 2 TPB, available to preorder here.

See you next week :-)
