I find it hard to compare the lies told by the Trump (and virtually every other presidential) administration to interpersonal gaslighting. If you’ve been on the receiving end of it or been in an abusive relationship, you realize that the mental distortion inflicted upon you by someone you at first trust and love is substantially different than news media and political figures lying to you. I’ve always assumed people in power are lying to me to get more power. I’m a very trusting person in a relationship. Being gaslit did a number on me and it took me a long time to trust myself and my observations again. (And let’s not pretend it’s just men doing this to women — I am a man who was abused by a woman. Being shitty doesn’t fall neatly into a gender binary.)
