Breitbart News Likens Democrats to Terrorists
Let’s play a word association game. I’ll say “sleeper cells” and you tell me what that phrase means to you.
Did you say “bedrooms” or “sleeping bags” or “hibernating bacteria?” Probably not.
How about “Al Qaida” or “scary secret criminals” or “terrorists?” Did these more frightening thoughts occupy your mind just then? More likely.
A recent Breitbart News article tries to convince you that there are now in fact sleeper cells hidden within the executive branch of the United States government, and that these “sleeper cells” consist of treasonous Democrats who didn’t resign after Donald J. Trump became president on January 20, 2017.
Matthew Boyle’s Breitbart piece was published on February 14, 2017 under the title “As Flynn Resigns, Priebus Future In Doubt As Trump Allies Circulate List of Alternate Chief of Staff Candidates.” Mr. Boyle reports that an unknown source says that evil Democrats are “hiding like sleeper cells everywhere” throughout the federal government. (Various different definitions of “sleeper cell” are reproduced below.)
Can you just picture these sinister Democratic officials lurking around Washington DC with AK-47s and explosive vests hidden in their office filing cabinets and desk drawers? Mr. Boyle certainly hopes his “sleeper cells” comment gets you to think this way about these executive officials (fellow American citizens who very likely are hard-working and law-abiding public servants).
Mr. Boyle’s article purports to be about the recent resignation of Trump’s National Security Advisor Michael Flynn and the causes and consequences thereof. But almost instantly the article descends into a scurrilous suggestion that the Democratic party is intentionally sabotaging a sitting President by leaking information illegally and is planning to continue doing so like some pocket of ISIS terrorists who’ve blended into the federal bureaucracy. Mr. Boyle goes on to discuss White House Chief of Staff Reince Preibus and his precarious position within the new Administration after several embarrassing setbacks.
But how can Mr. Boyle sleep at night asserting the existence of Obama “sleeper cells” in the executive branch, when Mr. Boyle himself states in the same article that Mr. Priebus has full knowledge of the identities of all 50 of these executive branch employees who are under suspicion of leaking, or potentially leaking, sensitive information concerning the Trump Administration to the press.
If Mr. Priebus has identified everyone in the so-called “sleeper cells,” then they just aren’t sleeper cells anymore. A sleeper cell is no longer a sleeper cell when you have identified its members and location. It’s more like an “awake cell” at this point. Mr. Boyle’s attempt to not just smear but to vilify as treasonous our fellow Americans who have dedicated themselves to the work of public service is a reprehensible deed.
