Serving Honorably

I too spent four years in the Navy onboard a WWII “tin can”. It was a wonderful experience that I would not trade for anything but I also find it awkward to say “I’m a veteran.” Maybe it’s because I have learned a lot from the responses I have received over the years. When I first returned from Viet Nam I heard all of the obligatory “baby killer” epithets but over the years it mellowed out. Now it’s just a handshake and a very hollow “thanks for your service.” I’d rather be quiet about it all.
