Absolutely insane. At the core of science, especially data science, is mathematics. A scientist who doesn’t understand mathematics doesn’t understand science. Hell, as I’ve had to explain to a number of people in science (which is quite terrifying to be honest) hypothesis testing is essentially just statistical proof by contradiction.
Then again, don’t ask me to number crunch or solve things. I’m a mathematician, not an accountant. Crunching numbers is what a computer is for. You just need to know the process in case you ever need to tell the computer what to do, or if the mathematics itself is relevant to the issue.
