Not this one?

The urge to ethically cleanse public life of “bad history”, to shove down the memory hole any bust or tribute to past folk whose values make us bristle today, is intolerant, illiberal and profoundly paternalistic.

Or did you not write that?

Or this one?

What we have in contrast today are highly elitist assaults on statues in the name of tackling “offensive” images and protecting minority groups’ feelings — a foul, implicitly racist exercise that expresses weakness and cowardice, a FEAR of the masses, which is the opposite of those older, more radical moments in history. Please do not exploit great moments in history as a justification for your tantrums disguised as radicalism.

I see you are having a problem with me tackling certain points you made.

I am also completely sure you did not get my opening joke.

You are the one baiting. You are safe, don’t worry, little old me will not topple you either.

I get your grief, furor, and outrage. Your warning makes sense up until the point that it doesn’t. To the victors go the spoils.

I keep wondering about the phrase, “year zero mentality.” I’m guessing you are talking about the Christian erasure of other calendars with earlier dates. Thus messing with millions of minds who all believe the earth was created by their deity just a scant 6,000 years ago. Am I right on that one? I haven’t seen this phrase anywhere but in your article.

I don’t know about you but history is a mess already. Maybe we could focus for once on erasing greed, hatred, and delusion? I see those statues as monuments to a false historical record that wants to absolve the Confederates. If the children of the Confederates truly desire to repair this world, and heal our country, then they need to fight like hell to take down those monuments to white supremacy.

Side note. I cried when I heard about the Taliban toppling those giant Buddha statues nearly 20 years ago. I’ll tell you, not one of those statues converted me to Buddhism. They are history now, as they were before they were blown up. Not a single statue will ever make me find peace, or truth.
