We’re already overwhelmed, often by discussions about “what no one is talking about.” We could get down to basics. What matters the most to people, at the proverbial end of the day, is survival — the means to keep their families together, housed and fed. Poverty today, in a country that has no mercy on the poor, is a scary issue, so we mostly avoid it. Few things are as terrifying as having the floor ripped out from under us, so we convince ourselves that it could never happen to us, personally. Only happens to bad/lazy people.
