The latest trailer for The Batman sees Robert Pattinson Dark Knight face off against the Riddler
The Batman debuted a brand new trailer at DC FanDome on Saturday, showing off the best look yet at Robert Pattinson’s take on the Dark Knight and promising an even darker, grittier version of Gotham’s Caped Crusader than any that have hit film before.

Set just a few years in Batman’s career as a superhero, The Batman promises to show not just a look at the early days of Batman but numerous other proto-villains and allies, including Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred, and Colin Farrell as The Penguin.

The new trailer also gives the first real look at Paul Dano’s take on the iconic Batman villain the Riddler, who appears to be going for a far creepier, serial killer-esque style version of the character (as opposed to the campier, trickster that most Riddler adaptations hew towards). “What’s black and blue and dead all over?” we hear him ask. An opening shot in the trailer shows a man we see only from behind sitting at a diner counter drinking a cup of coffee when the cops arrive. He puts his hands up, they slam him on the counter to cuff him and as he’s taken away, we see the unmistakable sign of the Riddler in the foam of the latte he leaves behind: a question mark.

This latest trailer gives a much different vibe than previous iterations of the Batman saga; it balances light and dark in a way that gives it almost a film noir effect. We don’t learn a lot more about the characters, but we definitely get the sense that this younger Batman hasn’t quite identified as a hero just yet. Take the way he describes the Bat Singal: “Fear is a tool. When that light hits the sky, it’s not just a call. It’s a warning.”

Pattinson and co-star Zoe Kravitz, who plays a mysterious Selina Kyle/Catwoman, were joined by director Matt Reeves in a panel discussion before the trailer dropped. Pattinson said this version of the Caped Crusader “really knows what he’s doing when he puts on the cowl. He’s a bit out of control. He hasn’t really defined what Batman is … he’s becoming this sort of odd creature.”

The original trailer for the film — released over a year ago at 2020’s DC FanDome event — offered only a mere glimpse of the movie, based on the small amount of footage that Reeves was able to film before COVID-19 caused production to shut down in March 2020. Filming was also forced to pause again in September that year, just a few days after production had started up again when Pattinson tested positive for COVID.

It’s been a long road to theaters for The Batman; the film was originally intended to hit theaters on June 21st but was pushed first to October 1st. It’s now slated to open in theaters on March 4th, 2022.

The glass fibers connecting our wireless world
All modern means of communication rely on glass. From the Gorilla glass on our phones to the infotainment screens on our cars. But when I think of the internet I think of 5G, Starlink satellites, and WiFi, and I never think about the 750,000 miles of fiber optic cables currently running under our oceans: the tiny strands of glass that carry all of our photos, emails, and video chats. It is through these hair-thin strands of fiber that we are able to instantly communicate to almost anyone, anywhere, and it all relies on a 5,000 year old technology: glass.

Robert Pattinson packs a punch in the latest trailer for The Batman, unleashed at DC Fandome on Saturday. Intense acting and fight scenes make this movie look like possibly the grittiest, most tortured version of the caped crusader to sear the big screen.

The Batman is scheduled to come out March 4, 2022. Directed by Matt Reeves, the new take on the classic comic features a number of well-known villains given a dark new look. Paul Dano stars as the Riddler, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman and an unrecognizable Colin Farrell shows up as crime boss the Penguin. Facing them are Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon and Andy Serkis as faithful butler Alfred.

This version of Batman “doesn’t have as much control over his personality,” Pattinson said as he introduced the trailer. “The delineation between when he’s Batman and when he’s Bruce is not so clear as other iterations … I kind of really like this idea it’s a little bit out of control. He hasn’t completely defined what Batman is, but he gets lost in it. Whenever he’s putting it on every night, he’s not sleeping, and he’s becoming this quite sort of odd creature.”

While chatting with Pattinson and Kravitz at DC Fandome, Reeves said he’s currently finishing the film. The first trailer for this Batman movie was unveiled at last year’s Fandome, but COVID disruption saw the release date pushed back. At the moment, it’s only set for theaters and won’t stream on Warner Bros. streaming service HBO Max for at least 45 days afterward. However there are two Batman-adjacent TV spin-off shows in the works for HBO Max, one of which reportedly focuses on the cops of Gotham PD.

This standalone version of the caped crusader shouldn’t be confused with several other versions of the character who will reportedly show up in The Flash, a forthcoming movie starring Ezra Miller as the scarlet speedster. That film is set to unite a multiverse of superhero stars old and new, including Ben Affleck as the Batman from the Justice League films and Michael Keaton from Tim Burton’s Batman films.

The Flash trailer teases Michael Keaton’s Batman (and Batmobile) at DC Fandome
Keaton and Ben Affleck are caped crusaders in Ezra Miller’s speedy solo adventure.

The Flash was one of the breakout characters from DC’s Justice League movies, but headlines suggest he could be upstaged in his own movie. The first trailer for The Flash, unveiled at DC Fandome on Saturday, hints at what we can expect from the scarlet speedster’s solo adventure, which is reported to feature not one but two (or more) Batman stars. The trailer also offers a strong hint we’ll see Keaton’s iconic Batmobile.

The Flash premieres Nov. 4, 2022. It’s directed by Andy Muschietti, one of the directors of horror hit It and its sequel. Sasha Calle stars as Supergirl and Kiersey Clemons as Iris West in a film influenced by the comic Flashpoint, which featured alternate timelines. That opens the door for alternate versions of the characters — which means Ben Affleck’s familiar Batman will be joined by Michael Keaton once again donning the rubber batsuit from Tim Burton’s Batman films.

The first teaser doesn’t show Affleck or Keaton on screen, but does give a glimpse of the Batcave and rubber batsuit mask worn by Keaton in 1989’s Batman and 1992’s Batman Returns. And under a dust sheet is a familiar shape — although we don’t see the Batmobile from the Tim Burton-directed movies, it does inspire a character to yell “Holy sh — !”

Oh yeah, and there are two Flashes, as Ezra Miller appears on screen twice apparently playing two alternate multiverse versions of the character.
