Based on your experience as a learner, what do you think you will be able to get out of this course?
Since a few years ago, I started having a very ambitious dream. I wanted to write a blue print about the future of Indonesia’s education.
Then, one day, coincidentally, I was watching a TEDx London talk by Ken Spours. He mentioned that to revolutionize the education in England “we should start by trying to agree about our value”. In his talk he mentioned three main values. First, that everybody counts, everybody can be educated, everybody is educable, and everybody can both think and do. Second, that we must consider the law of care, which meant that the ones who need the most must get the most.Third, he argued that we should move from the word “versus” toward the word “and”. For example, the term “subject versus real life experiences” and “knowledge versus skills” should rather be “subject and real life experiences” and “knowledge and skills”.
Although Ken Spours was talking about the education in England, I could relate with his speech, especially about the three values mentioned above. I think those values can also apply in the context of Indonesia.
So, I searched more about Ken Spours on the internet. Then, I found a document which was edited by Ken Spours and Neal Lawson. The name of the document is “Education for The Good Society: The Values and Principles of A New Comprehensive Vision.” After reading that document, I remembered my dream of creating the blue print.
A friend of mine, named Ibu Weilin Han also wanted to develop a blue print about the future of Indonesia’s Education. So, we decided to arrange meetings with a few educators to talk about our dreams about Indonesia’s education. We had a few meetings and discussed a lot of things, one of was “what do we want the purpose of education (in Indonesia) to be like?” Then, we started re-reading the about the Indonesian constitution, old documents about Indonesian education, about the vision of Indonesia’s founding fathers. We hoped that by trying to understand the past we could make more sense of the present and also help in designing the future.
After a few meetings, I realized that developing a blue print is not easy at all. To develop a blue print,
we need to learn a lot of things, talk to more people, and also reflect deeply on what we really want the future of education to be like. The blue print is not finished yet and we might need quite a lot of time before we finish developing the blue print.
I was interested in this course because I thought that this course might help me me reflect on what I want the future of education to be like, including in the Indonesian context. Hopefully, it will help me in developing the blue print that might be finished one day later.
And what ideas do you already have about the future of education?
(I’ll answer this in my next post)
