The IISE. An acronym for the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers. A global organization that is committed to providing professional and social networking opportunities to Industrial and Systems Engineering (“Management Engineering”, for us Waterloo breed). More recently, the University of Waterloo has established an IISE chapter dedicated solely to UW students. The UWaterloo IISE chapter operates under three pillars — Academic, Professional and Social.

Since the formation of the chapter, I have served as the Operations director on the executive team. I am responsible for organizing events for our students that fall under the umbrella of the three pillars. Since I have joined the chapter in its infancy, I have been quite pleased with the progress UWaterloo IISE has made. We have equipped our first year students with the fundamentals of job hunting through resume critiques and interview workshops. Secondly, we have organized several social mixers to connect our younger and older students with professors, and form relationships outside the classroom. Furthermore, we are actively liaising with our alumni students to provide insights from the field through panel events. Lastly, we have taken big steps to become more competitive in IISE conferences, by having students compete in various events and represent our program and university. Overall, we have come a long way in such a short span of time.

I, for one, am extremely passionate about people. My happiness lies in being able to empower other people with resources to excel both professionally and socially. So as you read this and wonder — Whats in it for me? I want you to think about your relationship with Management engineering as whole. If you are passionate about our program, and are determined to provide our students with opportunities to grow, then being a part of the IISE is right for you. We are a team of motivated individuals, that work for the students. We want to put our program on the map, and work tirelessly to increase our credibility. With that being stated, do you want in?
