Secrets, revelation, shadow selves and the hidden, The Moon is dark so as to reveal the light. A much misunderstood card.

The Moon major arcana tarot — Collage by the writer @Dhylan Boey

The Moon shown here is the Great Yin, the Unknown and the Unknowing.

Of course, The Moon is also the Triple Goddess. She has many names — Hecate, Demeter, Selene, Diana, Luna, Artemis, Chang’E. The Moon Goddess in this tarot card here is Hecate, who rules over the lunar and the feminine, Yin energies, witchcraft, fertility, shadows, the night, and all that is concealed. It alludes to big secrets, and hidden feelings, all tucked away into the inner reaches of outer space. And as a triple deity, her identity is changeable, as fluid as the waning and waxing faces of The Moon, circling the Earth as satellite.

As a Development card, The Moon sometimes represents a mystery encountered. Whether or not the mystery is solved depends on the context of the other cards in the spread. It can also forecast an issue of great sensitivity. And as the goddess that presides over doorways, sometimes The Moon also forecasts that you may reach a crossroad at this stage in your life. Choices will need to be exercised.

All of us have our super-intelligence and it has always been there, no matter how buried or deep. And now The Moon appears to announce that it has the answers you want. It is also the primitive recognition of your darkest secrets, dirty confessions or long-hidden fears. The Moon, if it appears as an Advice card, says: Embrace your fears! There is no way to avoid this, so you might as well go forth, take the bull by its horns (an apt expression as horns were used in neaderthal days to mark the crossings of time, via the lunar phases).

Another way to interpret this as Advice is this: As the great Reflector, it borrows light from the sun to shine. Do not try to be the main star in this situation, be the satellite, be the supporting cast, use soft power. It is better to play second fiddle in this instance.

I use the Mythic Tarot as my inspiration so this design also reveals a crab surfacing in one corner of the collage. As crustaceans — shell-armoured creatures of the deep dark depths — crabs were believed in the past to be nocturnal creatures, things that only appear at night, the dark. Crabs represent primal fears deep within our unconscious. As a Challenge card, it is saying your fears will soon surface due to the preceding circumstances. There will be trouble.

A male client came to me with a big problem at one of his business investments. As a seasoned businessman, I would think he would be very savvy about where he parks and grows his money. So when The Moon showed up, I realised he didn’t know much about this particular company he invested in nor the nature of the business as most of it is conducted through his two other partners. Moreover, the funny thing was, the company he had invested in was a fishery, you know, one that fishes for seafood including… Crabs!

Another client, a woman, had this card in her Challenge position. It was regarding her health, and The Moon tells her she may likely uncover some hidden diseases, or dormant virus soon — better schedule a checkup now!

The Moon is especially significant to querents born on the 2nd, 11th and 20th of any month. Also it rules — of course! — Cancer, the celestial crab.

What experiences do you have with The Moon tarot? Please share and let me know if you have any queries and I’ll try to give some further insights.
