I have had a lot of tongue-twister moments.

I Am Having Dinner with the Guy I Really Like.

But I haven’t said anything interesting or even remotely amusing for the last hour. My heart is racing and sweat is beading. It’s all getting kind of awkward. My inner self is mocking me - such a loser! I can’t come up with anything on the spot. I feel dumb and ashamed.

The well-intended aspiration of improving oneself has a catch that few seem to note. It implies that you need to be improved. But what kind of serious character defects do you really have? What’s the most used laugh tactic by comedians? By talk show hosts? By me?

It’s callback.

Why? Because it’s the laziest but most effective way to get people laugh.

Lazy means: least amount of effort — it works perfectly for non-funny people

Effective means: you stand a 95% chance of successfully cracking people up when you use it.

What Is Callback & Why It’s Lazy & Effective?

Callback is a joke that refers to one previously told. The result is usually a much bigger laugh the second time as the audience is much more surprised the longer it’s held back.

  3. Giving a specific but thought-provoking ask at the end

But this time I tried something different

Recently, I came across Harry Dry’s Marketing Examples blog. He has provided an example of a funny cold email sent by the company, ‘Gusto’.

I was at McLaren GT car launch last week with Clarence & Jeff.

Jeff and I entered into a conversation about the mighty Henry Ford.

Me: Do you know that Henry Ford is a really funny dude?
Jeff: Henry Ford??

Me: Yes!! The famous actor!
Jeff: (super confused) You mean the founder of Ford Motor?

It’s been 270 days since I started this experiment. Here’s an overview of what has happened:

After 30 days: Beta daily routine system. Went through massive changes.

After 60 days: Hit a wall in career. Felt lost. didn’t want to do anything.

After 90 days: Picked myself up. Tried to find my life purpose by taking up and experimenting with many hobbies (7, to be exact). I knew I wouldn’t keep doing all of the hobbies but I wanted to know which ones I can stick to and if they would be a step forward towards the meaning of life.

After 270 days: The majority of my daily routine is stable. While still switching things around (at a micro level), I discovered some “daily-routine principles” (at a macro level).

It’s been 20 years since Starbucks entered China on Jan 11, 1999.

The China market is obviously important for Starbucks: steady revenue increase for 9 years straight, despite the first incline in Q3 2018.

As of now, Starbucks is growing in China at the rate of 1 new store per day, creating more than 10,000 job opportunities every year. There are more Starbucks stores in Shanghai than in New York. Actually, the former doubled the latter.

Starbucks’s success in China is significant for many foreign companies that have always had their eyes on China.

McDonald and KFC brought fast food to China, but both are viewed as junk food; Walmart brought “affordability and supermarkets” to China, but not many people care now because of e-commerce; Coca-cola invested hugely in China, but eventually had to sell its bottling assets. …

I have been stressed out. I am worried about this one deal and whether it’d come through.

From a career perspective, this is the deal I need to prove myself.

My boss has put faith in me. He asked me and only me to develop the Chinese market. He has opened up the direct communication channel with him (He’s pretty high up and I’m rather junior). He has offered to mentor me. He has given me everything my next level or even my next-next level have access to. Except for one thing — the official designation change, i.e. the promotion.

There are two schools of thought around Life purpose/passion.

One says pursuing what you love, made famous by Steve Jobs.

The other says “Follow your passion is flawed and can be harmful — leading to frequent job/career changes and anxiety/angst,” said by Cal Newport.

I’m somewhere in between, and I will show you why.
