How to Create Growth in Any Environment/Business

Not a single business on the entire face of the planet is absolutely flawless, or can’t be improved somehow, even in a small way. Every single company can be, in at least one way, made better. Whether it be in its efficiency, sales, customer service, employee satisfaction, etc., there is ALWAYS room for growth, and ALWAYS will be, because we are human. As long as our businesses are (even partially) run by humans, there will be flaws to fix, and improvements to make.

Ugh, this is a bad thing, right? Wrong! This is an entrepreneurs dream! Most successful startups come from identifying a problem, or a need among a group of people, and fixing that problem/meeting that need, OR finding a need that has already been somewhat met, and finding a more successful way to meet it. This is true for any problem or need of a company, even if that need is as simple as just needing more customers. Good news! You specifically, have something to bring to the table that a lot of others don’t. You have something that others want, whether it be your positive attitude, your motivation, critical thinking, problem solving, a specific skill, etc.; something that ups your value. Every single one of us does. The combination for success is when you can identify an improvement that can be made in your environment, and use your talents to make that improvement; to fill that gap, or fix that flaw. A plan can be easily made if you can identify 3 different observations. Observation 1 is identifying the opportunity to sell something. Observation 2 is identifying what is needed; the thing or idea that if was there, would help sell said thing. Observation 3 is what talent, trait, or skill you have, that can help create the idea/thing that’s needed; that if were there, would help sell said thing; the solution. An example to follow.

“Wait, hold the phone, this chick is only seventeen. What does she know about creating growth in any environment? She hasn’t lived long enough to be in THAT many different environments!” Touche. BUT, I’ve been around long enough to learn that every environment/business can be improved, and that’s all I need to know. After the first two months at my job of almost a year now, I was able to identify a hole in this well-established company, and fill it. So here’s a short story about how even a teenager working a minimum wage job, can create growth in her environment, by making three observations.

Once upon a time there was a young girl who worked as a barista at a cute little coffee/gift/candy shop, owned by a large nut factory. After a month or two, she realized that latte’s were really pretty and she was good at making the whipped cream on top look appetizing. She would make someone’s drink and think, “wow that looks so good it makes me want to drink one!” So Observation 1 (opportunity to sell something): being able to SEE such a pretty drink made you want one. This girl spent far too much time on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and Snapchat, and other social media. She was very familiar with social media and how it works. She asked her manager why there wasn’t a Twitter page for the coffee shop. Her manager said, “they’ve got a Twitter page down at the factory for nuts, and I think their social media lady is going to work on creating one for the coffee shop, I’m not completely sure.” Observation 2 (what’s missing or needed, that if were there, would help sell said thing): there wasn’t a Twitter page for the coffee shop yet. She observed that the majority of their customers were adults. She recalled times in the past that someone would tweet a picture of their Starbucks drink, and seeing it would make her want one. She knew seeing pictures of these delicious drinks would be a way to potentially bring more local highschool kids in, widening the age group of the coffee shops customers/target audience. Observation 3 (the talent, skill, or trait that you have that could help create what’s needed, that if were there, would help sell said thing): The girl thought, “well no offense to the social media lady down at the factory, but I bet I could run the Twitter page for the coffee shop better, and I could create it and start running it right now.” She knew how to get the attention of young people, because she was a young person. She could take pictures of the drinks as she makes a particularly appetizing one, and tweet it, she knew how to successfully run social media, given her years of (possibly too much) experience running her own social media accounts, and she was a natural born salesman. So she put together a presentation, called the CEO of the whole company, and scheduled a meeting with him to discuss her idea. They met the next week in a conference room at the factory, and she presented the idea to him, explaining that she had a lot to bring to the table, and why she would do a great job running the Twitter page for the coffee shop. She explained that she wasn’t looking for a raise, or extra hours to run the page, and that she would do it for free because she would be gaining a valuable education. The CEO said that as long as she would get each tweet approved by her manager before sending it out, that she could run the Twitter page for the coffee shop. He took her to the office of the social media lady at the factory where they were greeted with a smile, and explained the idea to the lady, who loved it and had some pointers to share with her. They had a short meeting in which the girl received lots of useful information, and tips. She’s been running the twitter page ever since. If you want to check it out, here it is:

The point of this blog is that anyone can create growth, and add value to any business, and to prove that to you with a real life example, instead of just telling you, and saying “trust me! I’m sure this is how it works!” I wanted to show you my personal experience with creating growth, to hopefully spark something in you. These three observations can help you identify problems or things missing, and how you can use your skills to fix them. Every single person has something they can bring to the table. So bring it.
