The men who refuse to marry girls who have not been cut or genitally altered are the ones who give this practice its power. They generate rumours of a girl’s / woman’s ‘looseness’ that leave her ostracised, unable to marry and, in some cases, even to drink from certain sources of water !

The poverty and collectivistic nature of many African tribes makes marriage often the only source of income for many girls and women, which in turn greatly affects the wealth of the family she was born into. To overlook this just proves the very ethnocentrism my article is aiming at.
