Follow Up: Test Run in the DNA AMP Brooks Bedlam

On our previous post we looked close at the all new Brooks Levitate featuring DNA AMP technology. You can read that post here. The Levitate employs a polyurethane wrapped TPU cushion to increase energy return back up into the foot rather than out the sides as in most other cushioning styles. The result is an energized ‘springy’ responsiveness with just the right amount of ground feel.

As a follow up, Brooks was kind enough to provide us with some pairs of their all new Bedlam stability trainer. The Bedlam takes the same cushioning concepts as the Levitate and adds stability, but with a slightly different approach. With the Bedlam and future stability trainers, Brooks has come up with an all new GuideRails system. Rather than ‘propping’ up the collapsing over-pronator with a traditional post, the GuideRails instead provide holistic support by guiding the foot into alignment and reducing excess heel and shin movement. Fans of the Transcend will be familiar with the approach.

A few specs on the Bedlam — weighing in at 11.2oz the Bedlam has an 8mm drop and a medium to high arch.

Impressions from the run — wow. Running in the Bedlam was a great experience all around. Our test runner is used to high cushion high stability so he was a bit nervous starting out, but the reduced volume of cushion was almost unnoticeable and made up for by the responsiveness of the DNA AMP. The stability was comparable to traditional posted shoes and there were no ill effects felt from the switch. If anything, the GuideRails allowed for a more consistent sole experience without any of the ‘post’ stiffness some other stability trainers offer. Perhaps the best feature of the new Bedlam (and also the Levitate) is the upper — sock like fit that isn’t too constricting and a band around the top of the ankle that hugs and eliminates any chance of slipping. The Bedlam stayed perfectly in place on our test runs.

So if you are an over-pronating runner at any level and anxious to try out DNA AMP, the Brooks Bedlam is the shoe you’ve been looking for. Dynamic stability and responsiveness abounds in a lightweight package perfect for long and mid distance runners looking for a change.
