Jay Days — Between the Swells (1978)

You know, some of these West Coast gems I’ll never find enough information to properly elucidate their special quality. Hovering at around 1000 Youtube views, Jay Days “Long Way Home”, in a way, has about the appropriate level of cachet. Privately pressed records like “Between the Swells” were never meant to be huge sellers. Heck, they’d be happy if anyone beyond their immediate family “got” them. One thing they have going for them is their sheer lack of pretension and hutzpah. Album covers, album names, titles, the works, all were chosen to pay homage to something they had to get out there.

Can you imagine a record label getting an acetate of “Long Way Home”, hearing that vocal up-swoop topping his verses and saying remove that…you’re going to scare off the fine people from Santa Barbara or Delray Beach? You know, everything that makes this song special. Jay didn’t have time for that and for damn sure he knew had to find his own way out of there. Thankfully, we still have a fascinating, somewhat moving, Tropical-Soul remnant of this decision…
