Open source (and open data) is not apolitical

A quick thought, by no means original, but on my mind…

I’m seeing a lot of discussion about the value of open source, and its use in open data in particular. It seems there is an assumption that open source is a safe and clean way to manage data especially when it comes to a democratic or civic function.

I don’t think so.

How can the use of open source for a democratic, social or civic use not be political?

And in that context…How does it make it any more or less safe and clean from the alternative (whatever that is)?
