The most popular question we get asked is how do you actually build a Digital Church? As you can imagine, this is not an easy question to answer, but over the next 4 blogs, I will attempt, as best I can, to give you a template that you can use to start your journey.
Before we get into the details, lets first quickly define what Digital Church is from our perspective. It’s always good to be on the same page.
Digital Church is a way of connecting a Community together with a common Culture and relevant Content though technology.
I am sure you will find this definition useful and not useful at the same time (which I admit is annoying).
It should be useful as it gives you the three cornerstones of Community, Culture and Content, which it is my belief that all successful digital solutions need to adhere to.
It is not so helpful as it is obvious that there is not a one size fits all solution. A community to one person is different to someone else’s, as is culture and content.
What I know digital church is NOT is a single tool, platform or app.
I have spoken about this before on a few other blogs, but too often the Church faces the challenge of digital church by thinking building a single tool is the right approach. For some reason they throw out physical principles that work just because we are operating with technology.
Take engagement as an example.
Engagement should be our first thought and it should be the guiding principle before we even consider the next steps.
The question that should haunt us is
“How do we engage with the audience?”
Of course, this question should drive to ask other questions like:
- Who is our audience?
- How do they best engage?
- When do they engage?
Creating the persona of the audience is incredibly helpful as what is engaging for a 30 year old is very different to a 16 year old. You need to know the audience before you take the next step which is developing the Culture; the subject of next week’s blog.
