Insights from My Experience as a Freelance Digital Marketer in Kochi

In my previous role as a media analyst, I was tasked with meeting pre-established client standards, where there was little room for creativity. Although I found it easy, I always thought I wasn’t using all of my ability. I’ve always loved being creative and trying out new tools. I discovered digital marketing’s plenty of options when looking for a job. I first decided to take a course because I wanted to know what this was all about. However, after I began working in the field as a freelance digital marketer in Kochi, I became aware of how much I had been lacking. It seems like a fantastic chance that doesn’t just test you but also helps you develop in unexpected ways.

Becoming a digital marketing specialist does not happen fast, but with determination, the correct materials, and plenty of hands-on experience, you can do it. Here’s a more personal account of the journey:

1. Begin with the basics.

Consider this the foundation. Before delving into technological tools and methods, it’s critical to grasp what digital marketing is. Familiarize yourself with key topics such as SEO (search engine optimization), social media marketing, email campaigns, content production, and paid advertising. Watch a few introductory videos or read blog entries to get a sense of how everything fits together.

2. Do Some Learning

While a degree in digital marketing is not required, taking classes can provide a more structured learning experience. Free resources such as HubSpot Academy provides useful starting points. As you learn, try not to rush. It’s not about finishing a course; it’s about fully grasping the principles so you can apply them later.

3. Concentrate on core skills.

Digital marketing has many moving elements, but a few abilities are crucial.

i) SEO: SEO is the process of ensuring that websites appear in Google and other search engine results. Begin learning how to conduct keyword research, improve sites, and develop backlinks.

ii) Content Creation: Great content gets results. The idea is to deliver value through blogs, videos, and social media posts. You will learn how to write appealing language and design eye-catching images.

iii) Social Media Marketing: Each platform (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc.) has its own style. You’ll need to understand what works where and how to place advertisements on them.

iv) Paid advertisement: Pay-per-click (PPC) ads on Google and social media can yield fast results. Learning how to set up and optimize these advertising is essential.

v) Email Marketing: Building relationships via email is critical. Begin by learning how to develop email campaigns that engage and convert.

4. Make It Happen

Learning is vital, but applying your knowledge is where you truly develop. Begin small:

i) Experiment on your own: Create a blog, an Instagram page, or a short ad campaign for a product you enjoy. These personal projects are ideal testing grounds.

ii) Freelance or intern: Consider doing some freelancing work or interning with a small business. Real-world experience is valuable. Even if you only manage a few social media postings, you’ll gain a better understanding of how everything works.

5. Stay Up To Date

The field of digital marketing is continually growing. Stay up to date on the latest trends by following professionals’ blogs and social media profiles such as Neil Patel, Moz, and HubSpot. Join online communities — other marketers offer a lot of good information. You may even discover something that will set you apart in your work.

6. Improve Your Soft Skills.

As you learn more about digital marketing, you’ll find that it’s more than simply technical skills. It’s about communicating, being creative, and thinking critically. The ability to tell a story, come up with new ideas, and evaluate data to improve results distinguishes the best marketers from the others.

7. Make connections and cultivate connections

Knowing who you know is just as important in digital marketing as knowing what you know. Participate in digital marketing forums, join LinkedIn groups, or go to seminars and webinars. Making connections with others in the field can lead to new chances and provide you with the opportunity to gain knowledge from others.

8. Create a Portfolio

While working on projects, be careful to record your accomplishments. Make a portfolio that highlights your work, whether it’s an ad campaign that produced excellent results, a blog you’ve authored, or a social media effort. In the future, having a great portfolio will help you get clients or jobs.

9. Gain Practical Experience

Take advantage of internship or employment chances as soon as you feel prepared. Start small; internships or junior jobs are a great way to get your foot in the door. As you take on larger projects, you’ll keep learning and developing.

10. Never Give Up Learning

The realm of digital marketing is ever-changing. You’ll need to continue learning, experimenting, and adjusting to new resources. You should adapt to the changing landscape. The important thing is to continue developing and changing in the field, whether that is done by reading papers, watching videos, or trying out new tactics.
