  1. Eat healthy diet — Include vegetables and fruits regularly in the diet. Spinach, coloured vegetables like carrots, papaya are good source of nutrients necessary for maintaining healthy vision. Nuts and fish have high amounts of omega -3 fatty acids and are good to maintain eye health.
  2. Stay hydrated — Drink adequate amount of water everyday to keep yourself well hydrated. Inadequate water intake can aggravate dry eye symptoms.
  3. Watch your weight — Maintaining the ideal weight according to your sex and height is very important. Obesity leads to many health ailments like diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol levels etc which in turn can affect the vision. Regular exercises and a balanced diet will help in maintaining the weight within the ideal range.
  4. Quit smoking — Smoking leads to many eye problems like cataracts, macular degeneration etc which affects the vision. Cataract is reversible by doing surgery but macular degeneration can lead to irreversible loss of vision. So if you are not a smoker do not start and if you are a smoker stopping will save your vision
  5. Screen time- Limiting screen time will avoid computer vision syndrome, eye strain, dry eyes etc. American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends that every 20 minutes of screen time, take a 20 second break by looking at an object 20 feet away- the 20–20–20 rule.
  6. Eye protection — Protecting eyes from external injury is often overlooked. Wearing proper protective gear while engaging contact sports, protection from harmful UV rays by wearing UV blocking sun glasses can not be overemphasised to safeguard the eyes.
  7. Contact lens care- Following proper hygiene is very important to prevent eye infections while using contact lenses. Corneal infection following contact lens wear can at times lead to vision loss and careful handling of lenses, thoroughly washing hands while handling lenses, not to wear contact lenses while sleeping, avoiding washing them with tap water, sharing contact lenses with others etc are some of the precautions when lenses are used.
  8. General health — Taking care of health in general and regular physical exercises are important for eye health too. Keeping blood pressure and blood sugar levels under control is important to avoid vision related complications
  9. Adequate sleep — For maintaining good health adequate sleep is important. Inadequate sleep leads to eye strain and dry eyes.
  10. Regular eye check up — It is very essential that everyone should undergo regular eye check up to detect any eye problems at an early stage. Many of the serious sight threatening problems like diabetic retinopathy may not cause visual impairment at an early stage and can go undetected unless seen by your eye specialist. If detected early, serious vision threatening complications can be prevented.

At Shakthi Eye Care Centre, we provide comprehensive eye examination for all age groups including external eye examination, vision and glass testing, colour vision assessment, eye pressure measurement, dilated examination to check the retinal and optic nerve status. If needed visual field examination, retinal and corneal scanning are done to detect eye problems early.
