Nigeria: Dating App Reaches 10,000 Subscribers In 65 African Countries

Vybe, a Nigerian dating app in Lagos, has amassed a total of 10,000 subscribers in 65 African countries since its launch in April 2019.

The app was developed by Adetolani Eko, Moronke Anifowose, and Osagie Omonzokpia.

Adetolani stated that Vybe has a three to five percent growth rate per week.

However, it has increased due to the lockdown and restriction of movement following the COVID-19 pandemic.

The three founders decided to build the app, after noticing the absence of a matchmaking or dating platform that provides “African tailored options and features”.

“For us, Vybe is about the proper inclusion and representation of Africans in the global online dating and matchmaking industry. Africans currently have access to less than 40 percent of the top 10 dating platforms in the world, and this has limited their options for finding connections online,” Adetolani added.

Vybe is available in two languages; English and French.

Users of the app can either find matches based on their age, location, intentions, tribe and others.

There is also the second option known as “vybing”, whereby users find a match by just shaking their phone.

The app also uses a combination of AI algorithms, community, and routine checks to tackle the issue of insecurity.

“Our plan for the next year is to strengthen our user base in Nigeria and make more direct expansion into other parts of West Africa”, the trio added.
