Review: What a wild ride!I am one of those nerds/annoying people who needs to read the book before they see the movie and then after they see the movie delight in pointing out all the inconsistencies as you roll your eyes and imagine a world without such insufferable bookworms.I imagine that most of you are like me too, though. So after watching the trailer for this SEVERAL times in the theaters, I finally bought a copy, because thereâs no way Iâm not going to see a summer movie about a big old shark trying to eat people.Iâm so glad I read this book! What a gem. It truly is âJurassic sharkâ like the back cover says, though I think they are just trying to be cheeky about it. What Iâm talking about is how it really gets into the science of how a megalodon might have survived, similar to how Michael Crichton wrote Jurassic Park. He talks about why it hasnât come up to the surface before and why the events of this book create the perfect storm for it to emerge and create havoc. Alten also shows obvious researched knowledge of underwater submersibles and other science and gadgetry, and it adds a lot of authenticity to the narrative. And then thereâs the action â yes. please! I wonât make it any secret that I am not a fan of the book Jaws, it is seriously a snoozefest with a weird and unnecessary adultery subplot and not nearly enough shark action. Thank you, Steven Spielberg (and John Williams) for creating a masterpiece out of that drivel. This book is nonstop once it starts and it is weirdly believable. Though the meg is huge, I could see the action happening very clearly and I found it plausible and very entertaining.I canât say where the rest of the series goes, but as far as this first book, color me impressed! It definitely leaves you at least wondering what the depths of our ocean could be hiding. . .I am still skeptical about the movie â even just from the trailer it looks like they are only using the loosest ideas from the book â but Iâm so glad I finally tried Steve Alten. I would like to try his book about the Loch Ness monster next, as I have a soft spot for Scotland.

Review: The book starts slow. Thatâs fine. Many good books take time to build. (Not that this is by any means a great book. It reaches ok at best.)Then we meet the two female characters. Both are horrid people. I kept reading, as maybe they would gain dimensions. But no- 55% of the way through the book and neither has any positive qualities. Frankly I am tired of sexist portrayals of women. The wife of the main character, a journalist, is beyond a bitch. She is a user. She is petty, manipulative, duplicitous and immoral. She is not only sleeping with her husbandâs âfriend,â she has set up someone to reveal sensitive information about her husband so she can look like the âgood personâ in the divorce she will soon initiate. Of course, when her husband becomes newsworthy, in a positive way, she rushes to his side, eager to use him. The other female goes so far as to risk the main male characterâs life- twice. She is petty, vindictive, manipulative, irrational⌠and do you see a pattern? The breaking point was this line: âas Mac reminded Jonas, neither facts nor logic held any bearing on a womanâMisogynistic much? The writing is ok, but not good enough to support when such a negative view of women is shown. There are nasty women out there, so I went along until that blanket statement. While I paid only $0.99 for this book, and would generally not bother to return something that cheap, I will not support a writer whose very writing shows he hates women.

Review: Steve Altenâs novel about a âJurassic Sharkâ has just been made into a motion picture thatâs doing very well at the box office. Remembering vividly when âJawsâ premiered in 1975 and then reading the book written by Peter Benchley on which it was based I decided to give âMegâ a look. This version has been updated with an additional 90 days of prequel material since its initial publication in 1997 but itâs not anything that significantly enhances the story. Books are often better than the movie version and Iâll have to defer judgment until I see âMegâ on DVD. I felt the film âJawsâ was better than the novel and Altenâs no Benchley so Iâll have to wait and see. Also, for a book thatâs been in print this long and purportedly undergone a major re-write there are a surprising number of typos and name errors. Alten enjoyâs delving into the minutiae of ichthyology with lots of Latin genus and species references and shark biology. Youâll rapidly tire of reading about âampullae of Lorenziniâ and directional nostrils and the like over and over again. It takes a while to get going but once the story starts rolling youâll find the pages turning. The primary plot involves an ancient predator, the Megalodon, thatâs been lurking in the Mariana Trench for centuries kept in place by a layer of cold water. A Navy deep submersible pilot, Jonas Taylor has an encounter with a âMegâ that results in the death of two scientists and his dishonorable discharge from the service. He goes on to get a PhD and become a shark authority who later is called to aid in the investigation of damage to seismic instruments in the trench. Things go awry and a sixty foot Megaladon is able to rise above the cold water layer and start wreaking havoc on the surface world. Alten needlessly complicates things with a lot of drama regarding Jonasâ unfaithful TV reporter wife that was reminiscent of the affair between shark expert Matt Hooper and Chief Brodyâs wife in the novel âJawsâ. Probably the most preposterous aspect of the story is when some rogue Navy officers bring our first nuclear submarine USS Nautilus back from museum ship status in order to hunt and kill the Megalodon. This hair brained scheme makes no sense, the Nautilus was commissioned in 1954 and was decommissioned in March 1980. Making this sub seaworthy and restoring itâs nuclear propulsion system would likely take many months if not years (if even possible). And why use this antique when there are more modern vessels available? They only have two torpedoes and my understanding is that they only work on steel ships not sharks but Iâm no submariner so could be wrong. Needless to say this plot fails and the historic sub winds up at the bottom. He also has Navy characters refer to the Nautilus as an old âtin canâ more than once. In Navy parlance a âtin canâ is a destroyer, not a submarine. The story moves along with plenty of carnage that youâd expect from a vicious apex predator but you know at the end the monster shark is going to meet its end. Literally borrowing from the old Jonah and the Whale tale our hero is swallowed whole by the Meg but I wonât reveal the unlikely circumstances that kill the beast. Alten leaves things open for a sequel (many actually) because our Meg was pregnant and had baby megs. All in all this was just an OK read and pretty predictable, one Megalodon adventure was enough for me.
