Nothing UNcommon about these leadership qualities
There are an innumerable number of articles that have been written about leadership and the different forms in which it has been displayed. In order to make a worthy contribution to this topic I have tried to find distinct character traits which the greatest leaders of our time (from an Ali in boxing to a Walton in retail) all have in common. In studying all of these leaders I have had to revise my approach, numerous times, only to come to the conclusion that a truly authentic leader, cannot be distilled down and thus pigeon holed according to their “character traits”.
What then, if not their character traits, differentiates these individuals from others? How are they able to reach and sustain these levels of mastery and what can we learn from their examples? Identifying a single solution which addresses all of these questions is incredibly simple, however being able to implement this solution requires more time and effort, but it’s time and effort, that if well spent will alter the course of your destiny!
Find that which turns you on in life!
Mark Twain was famously quoted as saying that “The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why” — this quote eloquently summarises the most important step you can take today towards being an authentic leader. Your true purpose in life will fill you with an insatiable desire to make a difference in the lives of those you serve. Your creative genius and ability to associate with empowering teams of people is enhanced when you follow your intuition and do what is necessary to bring your love and service to the world!
There is no single template or recipe which you can follow to do this, you can take advice and seek mentorship from those who have achieved mastery, but at the end of the day you need to decide for yourself what the best course of action to take is. Keep in mind that you are completely unique and if you don’t make the change in the world that you are destined to make, the change will never happen!
The following list briefly explains the most important steps you can take to empower yourself and live an authentic life:
Identify what is truly most important to you, and set goals that align with it:
You are going to live your life through a type of filter. Your sensory and motor functions will be biased to absorbing, retaining and applying that information which supports your highest values (what is truly most important to you). When you acknowledge this and then set goals that align with your highest values your productivity will go up and the likelihood of you accomplishing your goals will increase. What is a leader if not someone who inspires a team to accomplish a specific goal?
Acknowledge your fears, and dissolve the hold they have over you:
Our fears are driven by either an imbalanced perception of what happened to us in the past or what may happen to us in the future. It is important to go into each fear, understand what the fear is based on (what is the reason for you to have this fear), and then to balance the nightmare by seeing that no matter what happens to you, fail or succeed, you are going to have just another opportunity to grow into the person you were meant to be!
Give yourself permission to follow your dreams:
The final key to unlocking your real potential involves identifying your mentors, those you look up to for guidance and council, and to start owning their power. If we honestly analyse why we look up to different people we will start to realise that the very things we admire in these people we already have within ourselves. One of the most powerful things you can do is to recognise that everything around you was created by people who are no smarter than you are, because after all, those leaders we admire must have stated somewhere in pursuit of their dreams…
