The music in 'Gueros'

There is a beautiful movie, Gueros. It’s the story about some young people. They are a hopeless bunch. As I have also experienced, when you become older life becomes less magical. The politics, the crushing of dreams and the realisation that we are no special snowflake dawn on us. We become more practical and less passionate. These young people too lose passion. That is until the youngest of them makes his friends listen to a piece of music. It springs hope in them. It lights up emotions long forgotten. They see light. They embark on a journey to find the long forgotten folk musician who made this music. Throughout the movie, we only hear silence when they listen to the music using earphones. The sudden life in their faces made me curious and hungry to discover that music.

Long after that my friend introduced me to a Russian folk song by Timur Mucraev. I hope the spelling is correct. When I heard it, without even knowing the meaning, I teared up. The first thought that came to my mind is, yes I have found the music of Gueros. I have never felt so moved by any piece of music. It made me feel hope and love, a lot of it. I could understand why that music made those young people leave everything behind and search for the artist.

It is wonderful how some things so far away touch something very primal inside us. It is interesting how a collection of musical notes makes us feel understood and less lonely. I never thought I would find that music, the special something which resonates with my emotions and personhood; to be so engrossed that I detach from myself and at the same time be in touch with my core.

It is little things like this that bring some semblance of meaning to life. To feel joy while shedding tears is magical. Though I would like to stay away from contemplations on art, I have to say this is true art, the one that brings us closer to ourselves.
