Yes, yes, and YES. I’ve had a persistent niggling feeling about all the issues you mentioned about TATBILB, in addition to WMAF: the mom’s death, the Asian actress playing hapa, the only black character being gay, the weird Electra complex-like relationships with the white male characters. And the sixteen candles scene wasn’t in the book! Adding it in the movie just seems like gratuitous Asian bashing. It’s the Top Gun shirtless volleyball scene of casual racism. Anyway, thanks for calling out all. This. Bull. Shit. Your article definitively decoded the systemic white supremacy in this piece of media and eloquently put my discomfort into words.
